As a Duke MBA student, you will start the process of developing collaborative leadership and organizational management skills along with a global outlook the moment you step into our program, during the first term “Global Institute”.

You will then dive into a rigorous exploration of the major functional areas in business, gaining a firm foundation in economics, quantitative analysis and statistics, accounting, finance, marketing, strategy, and operations management, while reinforcing your functional skills with additional management communications education.

As you continue in the program, you have the choice of undertaking a wide-ranging general management education designed to suit your individual goals, or of focusing more directly on particular career paths through a variety of inter-disciplinary concentration and certificate opportunities.

FORMAT:
Flexible and Focused
Duke MBA courses are taught in six-week terms. This arrangement allows you to take more courses (three or four per term) with the same number of faculty contact hours as in a more traditional system—giving you greater breadth of knowledge without sacrificing depth.

Thanks to this term schedule, you will have taken at least five elective courses by the end of your first year—more if you exempt core courses or elect to take the FleX Term, a two-week winter term with key career electives that help you prepare for summer internship opportunities.

This structure gives you the opportunity to explore a particular area in more depth, which provides a competitive edge as well as additional knowledge to draw upon as you consider, interview for, and then begin your summer internship.

This flexibility continues through your second year, when you can select from a broad menu of elective courses as you move toward job interviews and career choices.

CONCENTRATIONS:
Inter-disciplinary Depth
The Duke MBA offers optional specialized Concentrations in all of the major functional areas (such as accounting, decision sciences, finance, management, marketing, operations, and strategic consulting) and in topical areas (such as entrepreneurship, international business, leadership and ethics, and social entrepreneurship). Each concentration identifies a set of electives from which you will choose six courses.

Duke MBA concentrations have a common “4-2” structure, where the concentration typically has four courses in a focal area (e.g., Finance) and two courses from other areas that provide supporting breadth for the focal concentration.

This structure of thoughtful, supporting breadth for the focal concentration is absolutely unique among leading business schools – this interdisciplinary feature connects directly to Duke’s tradition of providing a general management education and our reputation for innovation through collaboration. As organizations work toward improved coordination of organizational activities, so, too, your education should reflect how functional activities and skills can be enriched and strengthened by other perspectives.

Concentrations are not required. You may choose none, one, or a maximum of two concentrations. If you choose two concentrations, think of the first concentration providing depth needed for early career success and the second concentration providing breadth needed for lifelong career success. Note that even if you choose two concentrations, you still have room in your schedule for additional electives to customize your MBA experience for either greater depth or breadth, as needed.

CERTIFICATES OF EXCELLENCE:
Specialized Depth and Breadth
Along with Concentrations, the Duke MBA offers several intense Certificate of Excellence programs. Certificates of Excellence serve as a complement to Concentrations, allowing you to distinguish yourself with greater depth of course work in a given area. We are introducing new Certificate of Excellence programs in Finance and Marketing that will likely have depth of six to eight courses in addition to the two distribution requirements as in Concentrations, together with demonstration of above-average academic excellence in the chosen area. As a companion to Concentrations, Certificates of Excellence allow you to send a strong signal about your depth, and the quality of your depth, in a single area. At the same time, if you choose this path you are required to take two additional courses, in total, to ensure that depth does not come at the expense of breadth of general management skills and perspectives necessary for lifelong career success.

The Stirling MBA has been based on several key concepts since its inception:

That it is a general MBA degree, with options for further specialisation, aiming to provide an integrated conceptual and empirical framework within which to understand generic areas of management.

The programme assumes no prior knowledge of business administration. It is an academic conversion programme, where graduates with first degrees in a diversity of subjects can attain professional knowledge of business administration.

That the MBA aims to enhance previous management related work experience, a usual pre-requisite for the programme, by helping students to evaluate their practical business experience from a more professional, academic and research perspective.

That it aims to promote an understanding of a changing, unpredictable and diverse global business environment, and the need for enterprising and flexible approaches and strategies to business management.

The Objectives Of The Programme

To provide students with a rigorous and critical grounding in key generic areas of management.

To enhance the student's ability to evaluate practical business experience from a more academic and critical perspective.

To develop awareness of the changing international business environment.

To provide students who choose to take a specialist MBA with specialist knowledge of their chosen area.

To instil a professional and responsible attitude to management.

To develop self confidence and the ability to present efficient, logical answers to complex problems.

Meeting The Objectives:

The business world is more internationalised, complex, unpredictable and challenging than it was in the late 1970s and early 1980s, when an MBA usually meant an exacting but relatively uncontroversial training in professional management functions. This rigorous traditional approach is still important, but it has been modified to allow for changing conditions. Today academics and practitioners teaching on the Stirling MBA programmes have to allow for more rapid and uncertain change in the core curriculum and learning outcomes. This is done in several ways. Firstly, though functional areas are still the core of the MBA course, there is now an emphasis on the way core management relates in theory and in practice to wider socio-economic and business environments and changing organisational contexts. These issues are strongly brought out in some courses, particularly those on general management, strategic management, marketing and international business. The need for more flexible approaches to management is also strategically catered for by providing a specialism in entrepreneurship and new venture management.

Secondly, there is less stress on teaching specialised technical skills, as these can become redundant quickly. Instead there is a greater emphasis on encouraging flexibility, initiative and self reliance, and in developing personal transferable skills, which retain their value as career paths in business become more varied and unpredictable. Personal transferable skills are developed throughout the programme, but there is generally a progression from formal structured teaching at the beginning of the programme, with an emphasis on information transmission, to less regulated and more variable teaching methods as the programme proceeds. This culminates in the dissertation project, where self direction is the ruling principle.

Courses vary in the extent to which these two principles are applied, but their overall impact in the programme as a whole is considerable.

A professional attitude towards management is strongly encouraged throughout the duration of the programme. The programme contains a great deal of structured teaching, learning and assessment and is very challenging. The attitudes required in the real business world are stimulated in the programme. Students are encouraged to meet the challenges positively and are urged to pay careful attention to time management and the meeting of deadlines. Just as the failure to meet deadlines for reports, orders etc. can be damaging in the real business world, so the failure to meet assignment deadlines without sufficient cause can have serious consequences on the programme. Poor time management is not an excuse that is tolerated.

Finally, the ability to specialise further is provided by variants in the Spring semester, which can lead to specialist MBA degrees.

The Drucker School offers two Ph.D. programs:

Ph.D. in Management
The Ph.D. in Management program is designed to allow advanced students to participate in an ongoing program of knowledge creation at the Drucker School. The program is intensive, with high expectations for publication and scholarly contribution. The objective is “to create and disseminate knowledge relevant to critical issues affecting management practice worldwide.” Except in rare cases, applications are not accepted for the Ph.D. in Management program until after a student has completed one year of graduate coursework at Claremont Graduate University. Ph.D. in Financial Engineering
A Master of Science in Financial Engineering (MSFE) or comparable degree provides only part of the training such experts will need as they work to analyze, price, and invent the innovative products that modern personal, corporate, and global finance will demand. This training, which can lead to the creation of new knowledge in the field, is appropriately achieved through the depth and breadth of study undertaken in the pursuit of a Ph.D. Applications are not accepted for the Ph.D. in Financial Engineering. Those interested in the degree must first apply for admission to the MSFE program.

About Financial Engineering

A Unique Degree Program

Several factors make the Financial Engineering Management program at Claremont Graduate University unique and highly desirable to both students and employers.

Our FE program has a dual focus on financial management and applied mathematics.

In the mathematics component, students develop the analytical skills and technical competencies needed to design and evaluate complex financial products. Technical excellence is emphasized as FE students take math courses with mathematics Ph.D. students.

The MAPEB is developed around the synergy between the Peter F. Drucker and Masatoshi Ito Graduate School of Management and the School of Politics and Economics. This collaboration enables our students to successfully engage in multi-disciplinary study related to public sector and nonprofit management. While other universities focus on each of these disciplines in isolation, at CGU, we have found that understanding the interrelations between fields is crucial to professional success and future opportunities.

The Master of Science in Advanced Management (MSAM) is an innovative degree program that is designed for students who already have completed an MBA and are seeking additional study in a custom-designed advanced management degree program. It is ideal for students who wish to develop a competitive advantage in a focused area of management, such as strategy, leadership, marketing, or finance, and for senior-level executives who received their MBAs early in their careers, but desire additional education to match their changing responsibilities.

In the MSAM program you will work with an advisor to design a program of study that ventures beyond theory—spirited interaction with faculty and peers is a key aspect of the educational process, with benefits for both participants and their organizations. Students generally will take courses offered in our management program, however those with significant management or professional work experience may be eligible to participate in classes offered by our executive program.

Because an MBA degree is a required prerequisite for admission to the program, there is a high level of flexibility to the degree requirements. As a Master of Science degree, the program has a significant research component and will include at least 12 units of research methods courses that can be taken in areas that are directly relevant to your advanced management objectives. In addition, you will complete 20 units of coursework in your chosen area of concentration. As part of the MSAM program you will be able to participate in management seminar courses along with Ph.D. students in management. In the event that you are interested in seeking a Ph.D. from the Drucker School, you can apply for admission to that program as you approach completion of the MSAM, and your coursework in the MSAM will count towards the unit requirement of the Ph.D. However, keep in mind that the Drucker Ph.D. program is small by design and that few students are admitted and then only after a careful assessment of fit with the research orientations of our faculty and our assessment of the student’s potential to be successful in our Ph.D. program.

MBA Program

At the graduate level, the MBA degree offers its students an option to concentrate in Finance. A concentration in Finance is desirable for individuals seeking a career in corporate finance, portfolio management, investment banking, consumer banking, international finance, and/or financial consulting.

To concentrate in Finance through the MBA, one is required to take four finance classes beyond the core course in managerial finance, FINC 850.

FINC 851 - Corporate Financial Analysis (an emphasis on financial policy)

FINC 852 - Investment Analysis and Portfolio Management (an emphasis on portfolio strategy)

FINC 853 - International Finance (an emphasis on currency influences in investments and corporate finance)

FINC 854 - Special Topics in Finance

FINC 855 - Financial Institutions and Markets (an emphasis on fixed income markets)

FINC 856 - Financial Engineering & Risk Management (an emphasis on futures and options)

FINC 858 - Corporate Governance (an emphasis on seminar discussion of the relationships between managers and owners)

FINC 859 - Seminar in Finance (an emphasis on a project of strong interest to you)

FINC 867 - This course number designates an 'experimental course,' meaning a course that is a new idea. The name and nature of such courses changes over time. Currently, under this number:

For Fall 2007, we have: Small Firm Finance & Banking, which explores similarities and differences between large and small companies, the challenges facing management with emphasis on financing. Topics include organization forms, business life cycle, risks and issues of entrepreneurship, sources of funding working capital and generational concerns. Course utilizes lectures, case studies and group interaction. Prerequisite: FINC 850. 3 credits. We also have for fall: Private Equity & Venture Financing, which investigates the legal, accounting, and financial issues surrounding the establishment and funding of a new or existing business using private equity. Emphasis is placed on equity transactions and private placements. Prerequisite: ACCT 800 or equivalent. 3 credits. This course is cross-listed with ACCT 867.

For Spring 2008, we have a Ph.D. elective: Workshop in Financial Economics. This is appropriate for Economics Ph.D and M.S. students, and perhaps others, with appropriate preparation. Contact the Department for more information.

Two Locations
The Lerner MBA is offered at two convenient locations: Newark and Wilmington. All courses are offered at Alfred Lerner and Purnell Hall on our Newark Campus. All core and required courses as well as some popular electives are offered at Arsht Hall on our Wilmington campus, located on Pennsylvania Avenue across from the Tower Hill School. The Terry MBA Program has two objectives. The first is to provide Terry MBA candidates with the knowledge and skills valued in the marketplace for post-graduate employment and long-term career advancement. The second is to provide our graduates with a lasting competitive advantage ... a set of seven leadership competencies that will not only differentiate them from other MBAs, but also add meaning and satisfaction to their lives.

At the heart of effective business leadership is business acumen--having advanced cognitive abilities to comprehend, apply, analyze, synthesize and evaluate business solutions. The first year core curriculum, comprising 26.5 credit hours of required coursework and 3 credit hours of electives, provides a solid foundation for today's business environment.

The Terry MBA Program has systematically integrated leadership development opportunities across the curriculum and throughout the MBA experience. In collaboration with Terry's Institute for Leadership Advancement, we have selected seventeen measurable components of leadership for development and assessment.

Eligibility and Prerequisites
The two-year MBA program is designed for non-business baccalaureate degree holders and business majors from non-AACSB International accredited institutions. The program involves four semesters of full-time study with fall semester admission only. While no prior business coursework is required of two-year students, it is often advantageous for incoming students to acquaint themselves with several functional areas of business prior to enrollment. Students in past years have benefited most from introductory coursework in accounting, statistics and economics.

A solid foundation in math will be needed to be successful in the program. This will require you to assess your quantitative background and, if you feel it is necessary, to prepare yourself for the program by taking a business math course.

The Accelerated 11-Month MBA Program
The leadership development experience of the accelerated 11-month program is like the two-year experience, but in concentrated form. Eleven-month students participate in the same seminars and workshops and work in permanent teams during the summer semester. During the fall and spring, they also have identical MBA P.L.U.S. and Career Resource Center requirements and opportunities. Moreover, each student works with his or her own professional leadership coach and meets regularly with that coach over the 11-month period to advance in self-awareness, implement a personal leadership development plan, process feedback, and reflect and refocus for further growth.

Petitions will be considered on the basis of a candidate's academic record, including grade point average and coursework completed, GMAT score and professional experience.

Overview of Combined Program
The Program will facilitate a closer integration of studies in law and business and will prepare students for the practice of law and/or a career in business administration. By the conclusion of their studies, students will be fully able to apply their knowledge and understanding to the resolution of theoretical and practical problems in either discipline.
Queen’s LL.B. and MBA degrees will be conferred at the completion of the Combined Program after all requirements for both degrees have been completed.

Please note: A maximum of eight candidates will be admitted each year to the Combined Program.

Program Structure
Year One: The first year would be spent taking a first year course load in the LL.B. program

Year Two: The second year would be spent taking upper year elective courses in the LL.B. program, including the Second Year Compulsory Course of Appellate Advocacy – Moots

Year Three: The third year (academic year of May to May) would be spent fulfilling all of the course obligations in the Queen’s Full-Time MBA Program

Year Four: The fourth year would be spent fulfilling the remaining course requirements in the LL.B. Program.

Moreover, students within the Combined Program must successfully complete:

the Upper Year Compulsory Course of Civil Procedure .
at least 8 credits in ‘management-related’ law courses (these courses are identified in the Faculty of Law Calendar and include: administrative law; business law; law and economics; tax law; and labour law).
at least 5 credits in technology-related law courses which include: copyright law, patent law, trademark law, cyberlaw and policy, intellectual property law, competition law).
Students enrolled in the Combined Program will additionally be permitted to use up to 6 credits in the Queen’s MBA program as credits that can be used toward completion of the LL.B. degree (the “cross-crediting program”).

Accelerated Path to Combined Program
A student may complete the Combined Program within 3 ½ years (instead of the normal four years). After fulfilling the first year LL.B. course requirements, students may take courses in the International Law Spring Program at the International Study Centre at Herstmonceux Castle in East Sussex, United Kingdom in Year Two.
Students who pursue this option can earn 9 credits in the International Business Law Module, which count as credits for purposes of the LL.B. degree. If a student earned 9 courses through the International Business Law Module - as well as 6 credits through the cross-crediting program - they would earn a combined total of 15 credits toward their LL.B. degree, which would permit them to complete the Combined Program by the end of December of the fourth year.

Application Process
Application to the Combined Program will require separate, simultaneous applications to the Faculty of Law and the School of Business. To begin the Law application, please proceed to the Queen’s Faculty of Law.
Applicants who are accepted into the Combined Program will be guaranteed a place in both the Faculty of Law and the School of Business as long as they complete the requirements under each program.

The minimum requirements for admission to the Combined Program are:

A four-year undergraduate degree from a recognized university. Successful candidates will typically possess a minimum B+ average (roughly equivalent to 75%) in the final two years of their undergraduate program.
All applicants must write the Law School Admission Test (LSAT) and the General Management Admission Test (GMAT). The minimum LSAT score is 157 (72nd percentile). The minimum GMAT score is 600.
If applicable, an acceptable score on one of the approved English facility tests (TOEFL, IELTS, or MELAB).

Program Overview - B.Com/Hon.B.Com
The School of Business offers two programs, each of which spans four levels of study. The Honours Commerce program, which leads to the Honours Bachelor of Commerce (Honours B.Com.) degree, provides substantial concentration in business subjects beyond the essential core of studies. The Commerce program, which leads to the Bachelor of Commerce (B.Com.) degree, contains essential grounding in business subjects and promotes the broadening of horizons through studies in Social Sciences, Humanities and Science. These programs are referred to collectively as the Commerce programs.

In addition, the School of Business and the Faculty of Engineering offer a five-year joint program for the Bachelor of Engineering and Management (B.Eng.Mgt.) degree. This program provides a full course of study in Engineering and includes a complete core of business subjects. Details concerning the B.Eng.Mgt. program and its academic regulations can be found in Faculty of Engineering section of the Undergraduate Calendar, or visit the Engineering and Management website at www.eng.mcmaster.ca/engandmgt/.

Also, the School of Business participates in the Committee of Instruction and offers courses for the B.A. program in Labour Studies which is described in Faculty of Social Sciences section of the Undergraduate Calendar.

In Level I, a student who wishes to pursue either of the Commerce programs establishes a foundation in behavioural science, computer science, economics and mathematics. Additionally, elective work is required, including cross cultural/language courses selected from a menu provided at the time of registration. While this course of study is prescribed in Business I, a student who establishes a similar background in the Level I program of another Faculty may also be considered for admission to Level II (Commerce II). Such a student should consult with the Academic Programs Office, School of Business.

A student must gain admission to Commerce II in order to proceed towards the Honours B.Com. or B.Com. degrees. In Level II a wide range of business subjects (accounting, finance, marketing, human resources/labour relations and management information systems) are introduced and further course work in economics is required. Elective work is taken from non-Commerce courses.

While the same core of required Commerce courses is completed in Level II, the Commerce programs diverge at Level III. In the Honours Commerce program, about two-thirds of the work is in Commerce courses, with the remainder of the load coming from electives outside the Faculty. In the Commerce program, about one-half of the course work is in each of Commerce subjects and non-Commerce electives.

In the revised programs, the School of Business has stressed the importance of breadth of knowledge. Students will be required to take courses in a variety of business disciplines, thus giving them a sound understanding of business functions and their relationships. They will also have exposure to international and cross-cultural issues. This will provide students with the knowledge needed for the world of global organizations. Prior to graduation, students will be required to complete two courses from the International / Cross-Cultural / Language menu.

Students can take Business I and the Commerce programs on a full-time or part-time basis. Progression to the next level is at the end of the successful completion of the 30 units of work that pertain to the lower level. Please note that only a few Commerce courses are offered in the evenings or in the summer sessions.

A student with an undergraduate degree will not be admitted or readmitted to either of the Commerce programs. Such students may wish to apply for admission to the MBA program.

The PhD program in Business Administration at the DeGroote School of Business offers outstanding students the opportunity to study and conduct leading-edge research with some of the top researchers in their fields. We are very happy to announce that the Ontario Council for Graduate Studies has recently reviewed our program and has approved our proposal to expand our existing PhD program. The DeGroote School of Business is pleased to offer a Ph.D. program in Business Administration in the following fields:

We will launch an additional field of study in Accounting in the of Fall 2008. The field of Marketing has also been approved by OCGS and will be launched in the future.

PROGRAM OVERVIEW

This research-intensive program is designed to be completed in four years although it is not unusual for some students to take longer. To ensure top performance students should plan to be on campus full time for the full four years. We do not accept students on a part-time basis. The program is tailored to fit individual needs based on students' past academic degrees and the specific area of research they wish to pursue. Each student will have a slightly different experience however the following general timeline can be used for planning purposes.

Years One and Two – Course work: Every student will complete between 6 and 12 courses consisting of advanced MBA courses, PhD seminars and independent courses with faculty.

End of Year Two – Comprehensive Examination: Students must pass a comprehensive examination by the end of the 2nd year. This exam is designed to test a student’s broad comprehensive knowledge in his or her chosen field of study. Students who do not pass this examination are required to withdraw from the program.

Year Three – Dissertation Proposal Defence: Students are required to submit and orally defend a formal proposal outlining their dissertation topic and a detailed plan for completing the thesis research.

Year Four – Completion of the Dissertation: Students will spend this final year completing their research. This stage includes completing data collection, completing the written dissertation and orally defending the dissertation in accordance with the guidelines determined by the School of Graduate Studies.

Alberta MBA graduates who completed the Public Management Stream will have the skills to work in leadership positions in the public sector. The Program
Students acquire the fundamentals of management through a comprehensive set of core business management courses. Building on this foundation, strength in public sector management is developed through specifically designed electives. In these courses, you analyze key issues in policy development, implementation and management. You learn to think creatively and make decisions in the complex and ambiguous environment of public sector. Other electives in relevant and challenging disciplines further develop leadership and management skills.

In a featured project course, theory is applied to a current issue. Under the guidance of faculty, students in this project course will work with a public or non-profit sector organization to understand, analyze and influence the resolution of a current problem in public policy development, implementation or management.

2007-08 Public Management Stream Program Outline

Public Management Courses *
SMO 643 - Strategic Management in the Public Sector: Strategic management in the public sector comprises defining public value, building consensus and support, making decisions, deploying organizational capacity to implement, and managing performance to achieve the desired mission and goals. This course addresses the unique complexities, ambiguities and messiness of strategic management in the public sector. Topics will include: Governance (structures, roles, responsibility, accountabilities, decision-making processes); Strategic Analysis; Information Gathering, Advocacy and Consensus Building (e.g., polling, consultation and networking, marketing and communication); Policy Implementation; Performance Measurement, Management and Improvement, Horizontal Management, as well as the Information Access and Privacy.

BUS 900 – Project in Public Management: In this capstone course, prior learning is applied to a current issue in public policy or public management. Under the guidance of faculty, students will work with a public sector organization to understand, analyze and influence the resolution of a current issue. Both the faculty leader and the host public (or non-profit) organization must approve the student’s project. Students will be expected to think critically and to demonstrate effective writing and presentation skills. Prerequisites: Org A 643 - Strategic Management in the Public Sector plus two others from the stream of public administration electives.

Specialization Electives

Students must complete at least TWO of the following second year courses:

BUEC 678 - Managing Business Government Relations in Canada: The role of business in the public policy process. How business organizations influence public policy and its administration, and how public policies affect business. Processes of change are of particular interest. Attention is placed on the motivation, behaviour patterns, and the dynamics of the interaction of different stakeholder groups, policy makers, and managers responsible for the implementation of public policies. Develops a framework for analysis of the effectiveness and efficiency of different fiscal, regulatory, and promotional policies; consideration is given to the impact of technological, economic and social change on policy choice in the long run. Prerequisites: BUEC 502 or BUEC 503

SMO 633 - Managing Organizational Change: This course examines organization change, e.g. how organizations make transitions from one state to another. There is also a focus on understanding how management goes about changing corporate culture, organization structure and management systems.

SMO 639 - The Process of Making Public Policy: Emphasizes a systematic and comprehensive approach to the study of developing and implementing public policy within the context of Canadian society. This course explores both the decision making process, and such factors as the separation of powers between levels of government, electoral politics, interest groups, media and government bureaucracy as they influence the making of public policy.

SMO 640 - Implementing Public Policy: This course will examine how public policy is implemented in organizations. Topic areas will include: using new knowledge to develop policy; influencing policy; and the role of managers in effectively implementing policy. There will be a strong focus on how public sector managers can effectively design and implement change strategies that take into consideration the organizational structure, systems, leadership, culture and politics. The course will combine classroom discussion of theoretical concepts with practical application in organizational settings.

Admissions

General MBA admission requirements, application deadlines and course requirements apply. Prospective students interested in the Public Management stream are requested to indicate this interest in their letter of intent at the time of application to the MBA Program.

Scholarships
Entering students who are employed in the public sector will automatically be considered for the Jim Dixon Public Management Scholarship. The award is for $3,000 which will be paid out over 3 years. The award will be made to the student who offers the greatest potential to succeed in the program and be leader in public service management. This will be evidence by the student's academic achievement and career progress.

Credits Against Electives
Graduates of management development programs offered by Executive Education and Lifelong Learning at the School of Business may be eligible for credits against elective requirements.

Subject to the approval of the Faculty of Graduate Studies and Research, students may receive credit against elective requirements for customized management development programs for the public sector offered by Executive Education and Lifelong Learning, as specified below.

Up to six credits may be awarded against elective requirements for prior completion of the Senior and Executive Managers’ Development Program offered to Government of Alberta employees by Executive Education and Lifelong Learning.
Up to three credits may be awarded against elective requirements for prior completion of the Management Development Certificate Program for Municipal Managers.
Students can apply for these credits in writing to the Associate Dean, MBA subsequent to receipt of admission. Please include in your application your date of graduation as well of a list of the modules completed. Credit will not be awarded if completion of these programs was considered in the student’s application for admission to the MBA.

The Alberta MBA program allows you the flexibility to pursue knowledge in a wide range of topics – from Finance to Marketing, International Business to Natural Resource Management within a specialization, a joint degree program or as a general program.

Career Management

The Alberta MBA equips students with the knowledge needed to function well in a corporate or entrepreneurial environment. Most graduates continue working with their current employer and use the MBA to propel themselves up the corporate ladder, however some graduates have used the MBA as a launching pad for a career change.

The Program

The Alberta MBA is a challenging and rigorous program that demands a significant investment of time and energy but pays dividends many times over in knowledge, understanding, skills, and strong friendships that last the length of the program and beyond. When taken on a part-time basis, it permits students to pursue the degree at their pace. Students typically complete the program within four years. However, the 57-credit program must be completed within a maximum of six years. The part-time program offers all of the benefits of the full-time program, but allows flexibility in the number of courses taken each term.

With only a small number of students accepted each year, the Alberta MBA provides for a personalized and high-quality experience which is further enhanced by the program’s faculty, many of them winner’s of teaching and other excellence awards.

During the fall and winter terms, courses in the part-time program are offered once a week in the evening in a three-hour block. During the summer months (May to August), select courses are offered in a six-week format (twice a week) or as a one-week, all-day intensive course, permitting you to catch up or move ahead.

The first part of the Alberta MBA consists mostly of a pre-set schedule of business and economics basics carefully designed to establish the necessary foundation for the elective portion of the program. Areas covered include: accounting, business strategy, economics, finance, management science, marketing, and organizational behaviour. For those with previous business training, these courses will serve as a welcome refresher, but will also provide a challenge by going beyond previously acquired knowledge and by presenting current findings and theories.

Teamwork is an essential element of the program and part-time students often find themselves teaming up with the same people course after course, building valuable friendships and an even more valuable resource and support network.

Almost halfway into the program, there already is an opportunity for some elective coursework. Some of these electives will provide the basis for so-called “second-year courses” and should thus be chosen with further coursework in mind.

If you want to pursue a specialization or stream in International Business, Technology Commercialization, Natural Resources and Energy, Public Management, or Sports and Leisure Management, you will need to submit a letter of intent as you near completion of approximately half of the core courses, outlining your goals and suitability for the specialization. Joint graduate degrees are also offered in cooperation with the faculties of Law and Engineering, and the departments of Agriculture and Forestry. Second year courses come from a wide variety of subjects, giving you an opportunity to fine-tune your degree with respect to your interests and opportunities you wish to explore. A capstone business strategy course which brings together previously learned knowledge and seeks to apply it to comprehensive cases and issues, is the only common requirement for each student in the second year portion of the program.

From part-time to full-time or vice versa
Sometime after commencing their studies on a part-time basis, students may wish to switch from a part-time course load to a full-time course load to accelerate the remainder of their studies. This is a possibility at certain points in the program but should be discussed with the MBA Programs office.

Pursue a professional designation

While taking courses towards the completion of the MBA degree you can also lay the groundwork for obtaining a professional designation. For example, a number of the core MBA courses fulfill some of the core requirements for admission to the Certified Management Accountant (CMA) entrance examination whereas the course “Introduction to Management Consulting” satisfies a portion of the requirements for the Certified Management Consultant (CMC) designation. Some students have also opted for the completion of the exams required for the Chartered Financial Analyst designation.

The second year offers a wide variety of courses one can pursue, giving you an opportunity to fine-tune your degree with respect to your interests and job opportunities you wish to explore. Experience learning internationally

Pursue a professional designation

While taking courses towards the completion of the MBA degree you can also lay the groundwork for obtaining a professional designation. For example, a number of the core MBA courses fulfill some of the core requirements for admission to the Certified Management Accountant (CMA) entrance examination whereas the course “Introduction to Management Consulting” satisfies a portion of the requirements for the Certified Management Consultant (CMC) designation. The BAcc degree is designed to allow you to obtain a broadly based honours degree in accounting and finance, the BAcc in Accounting, or to follow one of the specialist honours degrees variants. The BAcc with Finance and the BAcc with International Accounting allow you to specialise in particular aspects of the subject area, whilst the BAcc with Languages enables you to undertake language studies, normally continuing languages learnt at school, with the option of a year studying at a University abroad in your chosen language, perhaps in preparation for an international career in accounting or finance. In a recent ranking of 253 European universities in terms of publications in 19 top accounting journals, Glasgow University was ranked 7th overall in Europe for accounting research output, rising to 5th in the more recent period.
We shall give you information about Glasgow, Scotland’s largest city, with a population of around 750,000, which is situated on the west coast of Scotland with ready access to countryside of outstanding natural beauty and we shall give you information about the University of Glasgow, which is one of the oldest and most prestigious seats of learning, founded in 1451. TBB - Joint MBA Program at George Washington University

The School also offers three joint degrees for our full-time MBA students. Through a special credit-hour transfer arrangement, students may pursue MBA/MSF degrees in conjunction with the MSF program in two or three years or MBA/JD degrees in conjunction with the GW Law School in three to four years. The same arrangement allows students to pursue MBA/MA degrees in conjunction with GW's Elliott School of International Affairs in two to three years.

Joint MBA/MSF Degree
The joint degree MBA/MSF combines the general management focus of the MBA with the highly quantitative curricula of the MSF allowing for maximum flexibility in career focus and opportunity. The program can be completed in either two or three years.

Students will complete the MBA core curriculum during rte first year followed by MBA electives and the MSF curriculum. The MBA/MSF offers advanced education for individuals with specific career interests in the areas of financial management and applied financial research. Emphasis is placed upon the theoretical foundations of finance and quantitative methods in financial management. Students will be engaged in applied research and modeling using a variety of large professional databases and computer software packages. The international and regulatory dimensions of finance are also explored in depth. The program focuses on Risk Management, Financial Engineering, Banking, Corporate Finance, and Portfolio Analysis and Management. It has been designed to combine quantitative and computer skills with financial theory and applications.

Admission Requirements

Applicants must apply to both programs simultaneously, meet the admission standards of both programs and be admitted to both programs in order to be eligible for the dual degree. Applicants are considered for Fall entry only. Admission standards are high for both the MBA and the MSF. The joint degree program is rigorous and intensive, particularly if completed within the two-year option. Applying to the joint degree program is a three-step process:

1. Apply to the MBA program online. You must complete the online application and provide all supplemental material.

2. Complete the GW on-line application for the MSF degree. The degree code for MSF is 100 and the field code is 337.

You do NOT need to submit another application fee. Complete the application only. All of your MBA supporting documents will be forwarded to the MSF program. Upon submitting the application (without the application fee) please notify Laraine Philiotis, MBA Director, at gwmba@gwu.edu or by phone at 202-994-5536.

3. Complete the "Combined Program Application for Admission" and return it to Laraine Quinn via fax at 202-994-3571. This form along with copies of your MBA supporting documents will be forwarded to the MSF program. Joint MBA/JD Degree
Students must be admitted to both the Law School and the Full-Time MBA separately. Both Schools must separately approve the student's applications to pursue a joint degree program. Students are required to submit separate applications and present official copies of the LSAT and GMAT. Students can normally complete the two degrees in four years of full-time study. The joint degrees must be conferred simultaneously and only after all requirements for both degrees have been met.

Once a student has been admitted to both schools as a joint degree candidate, the first year of study must be devoted exclusively to the prescribed law curriculum. After the first year of law studies, the Law School will allow 12 credit hours of course work completed in the master's program to count toward completion of the 84 credit hours required for the law degree. The Full-Time MBA Program permits up to 14 credits of Law School course work to count toward completion of the 54 credits required for the MBA.

Joint International MBA/MA Program
The Joint International MBA-MA Degree Programs enable students to receive two separate diplomas: a Master of Business Administration (MBA) degree in International Business from the School of Business and one of six Master of Arts (MA) degrees offered by the Elliott School of International Affairs (International Affairs, International Trade and Investment Policy, Asian Studies, European Studies, Latin American Studies, and Russian and East European Studies). Our approach is multi-faceted: in addition to offering a large number of international business courses and embedding international content in many other courses, we also create multiple extra-curricular learning opportunities, including many outside speakers. Equally important, we leverage the vast international and language learning resources of Cornell University,

Here are the components of our Program for International Business Education:

First, we offer a large number of international business courses, including many specialty courses that go well beyond the offerings at other premier graduate business schools. Whether you plan to work in a multinational corporation or an entrepreneurial firm, there are courses to suit your interest. In addition, the Johnson School's Center for Sustainable Global Enterprise sponsors several courses that focus on the issue of global sustainability. Courses that include international travel and course projects that allow you to focus on real global business examples typify the Johnson School's unique approach to performance learning in our international courses.

Second, extra-curricular international learning opportunities are available to everyone, whether enrolled in international classes or not. For these, we give new definition to the concept of "compression;" events are squeezed into almost any available time slot to ensure that some events fit every student's schedule. Guest lectures take place at breakfast and lunch; casual small group meetings with visitors occur throughout the day. The UCD Master of Accounting programme (M Acc) is the oldest and most prestigious Master of Accounting Programme in Ireland. Rationale for the MSc in EBusiness

Electronic Business is thriving and has become an integral part of everyday life for public and private organisations, both large and small, across the world.

Despite its popularity, the impact of Electronic Business - in economic, organisational and behavioural terms - is still not fully understood. Technologies are constantly evolving and much depends on the social, organisational and institutional environments in which the technologies are situated.

This extremely dynamic Electronic Business MSc Programme provides students with a unique opportunity to learn about and understand fundamental issues relating to Ebusiness management, economics, and the implications of conducting business in an increasingly networked global environment.

Career Opportunities

Graduates from the MSc in EBusiness will target positions in some of the world’s leading management consulting firms,
service providers, and in other commercial and public-sector organisations. They may also work in professional services or project management, as IT and business analysts: they may specialise in eMarketing, or conduct further eBusiness related

Mid / Late August

Your experience begins with Welcome to Atlanta. International students from around the globe come to Atlanta and begin their preparations for business school in the U.S. All students come together for the start of Orientation, where you learn about all of the students that comprise your class. You are introduced to the difference between graduate school and your undergraduate experience. You learn our Core Values, and begin to test you leadership skills from the beginning with an overnight retreat and ropes course. After getting to know your classmates, you plunge into the academic rigor of business school with Fall LEAD Week. You spend one whole week on a single company, learning about problem-solving and making effective presentations. At the end of the week, you might even present your recommendations to senior management from the focus company. And you haven’t even started classes yet.

September – Classes

Classes start the next week, and you learn about the pace and rigor of a graduate business program. MBA Kegs begin on Thursday afternoons, and you begin to meet Second-Year MBAs as well as your First-year classmates. Committee of 50 is helping to recruit the next class of Two-Year MBAs by hosting visiting students. Before you know it, Thanksgiving Break is here, marking the last few weeks of the fall semester.

December – Finishing the Semester

These few weeks are full of presentations, final projects, papers and exams. After exams, you head home for a few weeks rest, more internship search efforts and to get ready for International LEAD Week trips.

January – A World of Experiences

Around the New Year, our International LEAD Week trips depart. For 2-3 weeks, some of you will immerse yourself in a new culture, and learn global business from an insider’s perspective. Some students will choose to attend Washington Campus – a week-long session in Washington DC that focuses on how business and government work together. Still other students will be in Atlanta for their LEAD Week on leading-edge topics. The I-Banking and Consulting students spend most of January on internship interviews, and many of these companies extend offers before February arrives. Classes start at the end of the month, where you begin your spring core courses, and take electives that help prepare you for your summer internship.

February – Classes and Internship Search

You continue on in your efforts to prepare yourself for internship by getting the most you can from your classes. Internship search efforts continue at a heavy pace, and some offers begin to arrive. You decide on which leadership positions you will want to run for, and begin the campaign process.

March – Leadership and Looking Ahead

The Leadership March is finally here…and every club is having an election. You find your opportunity to lead – and accept the challenge. Spring Break is either a week of focused internship-search or a short rest. Right after you return, we welcome the next group of prospective Full-Time MBAs at Welcome Weekend. All students pitch in and help bring the next "best class ever" to Goizueta. And you begin your application for the Goizueta Advanced Leadership Academy.

April – Making Plans

You will finish your courses, and start making plans for your summer with your internship company. Goizueta Gives is a wonderful opportunity to show Goizueta’s heart and soul through our annual effort to raise money for charities. Coffeehouse, end of year parties, and events like the International Business Association Potluck are opportunities to celebrate your hard work and all of the friends you have made along the way.

The Master of Laws (LLM) Program

With a specialization either in Corporate Governance & Practice or Law, Science & Technology, the LLM program offers a course-based curriculum of advanced study. The LLM program enrolls approximately 30 students per year (15 in each specialization). It is limited to students with a primary law degree earned outside the United States.

The Stanford Program in International Legal Studies (SPILS)

Leading to the completion of the Master of the Science of Law (JSM) degree, SPILS emphasizes interdisciplinary research on issues that are often related to public policy and legal reform in the fellow's home country or internationally. SPILS is oriented toward foreign candidates committed to pursuing careers in teaching, research, the judiciary, public policy, or service in government or nongovernmental organizations. SPILS enrolls approximately 12 fellows per year. Students who are interested in pursuing a teaching or research career in the fields of Corporate Governance & Practice or Law, Science & Technology should apply to SPILS. The LLM program and SPILS make separate admissions decisions, so these students may also want to apply to the LLM program in the field of their specialization.

Doctor of the Science of Law (JSD)

The Law School also offers the Doctor of the Science of Law (JSD) degree. JSD candidates are selected from among the applicants who have successfully completed the SPILS program. Students who are interested in the JSD program should apply directly to SPILS. However, completion of SPILS does not guarantee admission to the JSD program.

The Master of Legal Studies (MLS)

The Master of Legal Studies (MLS) is a nonprofessional degree designed for advanced graduate students from the United States or abroad who have no prior legal training and whose interdisciplinary research requires knowledge of the foundations of the legal system. Origins of Yale Law School
The origins of Yale Law School trace to the earliest days of the 19th Century when law was learned by clerking as an apprentice in a lawyer’s office. The first law schools, including the one that became Yale, developed out of this apprenticeship system and grew up inside law offices.

The future Yale Law School formed in the office of a New Haven, Connecticut, practitioner, Seth Staples. Staples owned an exceptional library (an attraction for students at a time when law books were scarce), and he began training apprentices in the early 1800s.

By the 1810s his law office had a full-fledged law school. Samuel Hitchcock, one of Staples’ former students, became a partner at the office and later, the proprietor of the New Haven Law School.

Affiliation with Yale College
The New Haven Law School affiliated gradually with Yale from the mid-1820s to the mid-1840s. Law Students began receiving Yale degrees in 1843. David Daggett, a former U.S. senator from Connecticut, joined Hitchcock as co-proprietor of the school in 1824. In 1826 Yale named Daggett to be professor of law in Yale College, where he lectured to undergraduates on public law and government.

Yale Law School remained fragile for decades. At the death of Samuel Hitchcock in 1845 and again upon the death of his successor, Henry Dutton, in 1869, the University came near to closing the School.

Mission of the School

In the last decades of the 19th Century, Yale began to take the mission of university legal education seriously, and to articulate for Yale Law School two traits that would come to be hallmarks of the School.

First, Yale Law School would be small and humane; it would resist the pressures that were emerging in university law schools elsewhere toward large enrollments and impersonal faculty-student relations. Second, Yale Law School would be interdisciplinary in its approach to teaching the law.

Initially, the Law School achieved its links to other fields of knowledge by selecting members of other departments of the University to teach in the Law School. Across the 20th century, Yale pioneered the appointment to the law faculty of professors ranging from economics to psychiatry. This led Yale Law School away from the preoccupation with private law that then typified American legal education, and toward serious engagement with public and international law.

Revival of the School
The revival of Yale Law School after 1869 was led by its first full-time dean, Francis Wayland, who helped the School establish its philanthropic base. It was during this time that the modern law library was organized. It was also during this period that The Yale Law Journal was started and Yale’s pioneering efforts in graduate programs in law began; the degree of Master of Laws was offered for the first time in 1876.

After 1900, Yale Law School acquired its character as a dynamic center of legal scholarship. In the 1930s Yale Law School spawned the movement known as legal realism, which has reshaped the way American lawyers understand the function of legal rules and the work of courts and judges.

The realists directed attention to factors not captured in the rules, ranging from the attitudes of judges and jurors to the nuances of the facts of particular cases. Under the influence of realism, American legal doctrine has become less conceptual and more empirical. Under Dean Charles Clark (1929 -1939), the School built a faculty that included such legendary figures as Thurman Arnold, Edwin Borchard, future U.S. Supreme Court Justice William O. Douglas, Jerome Frank, Underhill Moore, Walton Hamilton, and Wesley Sturges. Clark was the moving figure during these years in crafting the Federal Rules of Civil Procedure, the foundation of modern American procedure.

Emphasis on public law
Yale Law School’s tradition of emphasizing public as well as private law proved ever more prescient as events of the 20th century increased the role of public affairs in the life of the law. Yale graduates found themselves uniquely well prepared to play important roles in the rise of the administrative state, the internationalization following the World Wars, and the domestic civil rights movement.

In the 1950s and 1960s, the School became renowned as a center of constitutional law, taxation, commercial law, international law, antitrust, and law and economics. In recent decades the pace of curricular innovation has, if anything, quickened, as the School has developed new strengths in such fields as comparative constitutional law, corporate finance, environmental law, gender studies, international human rights, and legal history, as well as an array of clinical programs taught by a clinical faculty of exceptional breadth and devotion.

Human Rights Law
Since 1989, the Orville H. Schell, Jr. Center for International Human Rights has been the centerpiece of the Law School’s human rights efforts. Activities at the School include the Allard K. Lowenstein Human Rights Law Clinic, numerous conferences and special events, fellowships for students and graduates, support for the Yale Human Rights and Development Law Journal, as well as other student projects related to human rights.

Information Technology Law
Students interested in studying the implications of the Internet, telecommunications, and the new information technologies on law and society gravitate to the Information Society Project (ISP) at Yale Law School. The project embraces a variety of activities, including fellowships for young scholars and advice and education for policy makers, business leaders, nonprofit organizations, and the legal community. International Law

The MBA degree has become one of the most popular masters' degrees. As more universities started offering the degree, differences in the quality of schools, faculty, and course offerings became evident. Naturally, establishing some criteria of quality is needed to differentiate among MBA programs, especially for prospective students trying to decide on where to apply. As MBA programs proliferated, a variety of publications began providing information on them. Some of these consisted of compilations of information gathered from the universities offering the degree, usually published in book form. Eventually periodicals began publishing articles describing various MBA schools and ranking them according to some perceived quality criteria. One of the most prominent of these is Business Week, which devotes a biennial issue to ranking MBA programs. Financial Times, The Economist, Forbes magazine, The Wall Street Journal, and U.S. News & World Report also publish MBA program rankings. Different methods of varying validity were used to arrive at rankings of MBA programs. The Gourman Report, for example, did not disclose criteria or ranking methods,^[10] and these reports were criticized for reporting statistically impossible data, such as no ties among schools, narrow gaps in scores with no variation in gap widths, and ranks of nonexistent departments.^[11] In 1977 The Carter Report published rankings of MBA programs based on the number of academic articles published by faculty. Periodicals based their rankings on interviews with company recruiters who hired MBA graduates, surveys of MBA schools' deans, polls of students or faculty, and a variety of other means. The defunct MBA Magazine asked deans to vote on the best programs. The methods of obtaining ranks often changed from year to year. Initially, rankings included only a small number of universities consisting of the largest and best known Ivy League and state schools.

The ranking of MBA programs has been discussed in articles and on academic Web sites.^[12] Critics of ranking methodologies maintain that any published rankings should be viewed with caution for the following reasons:^[13]

Rankings limit the population size to a small number of MBA programs and ignore the majority of schools, many with excellent offerings.
The ranking methods may be subject to biases and statistically flawed methodologies (especially for methods relying on subjective interviews of hiring managers).
The same list of well-known schools appears in each ranking with some variation in ranks, so a school ranked as number 1 in one list may be number 3 in another list.
Rankings tend to concentrate on the school itself, but some schools offer MBA programs of different qualities (e.g. a school may use highly reputable faculty to teach a daytime program, and use adjunct faculty in its evening program).
A high rank in a national publication tends to become a self-fulfilling prophecy.

One study found that objectively ranking MBA programs by a combination of graduates' starting salaries and average student GMAT score can reasonably duplicate the top 20 list of the national publications.^[13] The study concluded that a truly objective ranking would be individualized to the needs of each prospective student.^[14] National publications have recognized the value of rankings against different criteria, and now offer lists ranked different ways: by salary, GMAT score of students, selectivity, and so forth. While useful, these rankings still are not tailored to individual needs, and their value is diminished if they use an incomplete population of schools, fail to distinguish between the different MBA program types offered by each school, or rely on subjective interviews

The HEC MBA Program takes a fact-based, cross-disciplinary approach to management education. The learning process relies on the case method and a wide variety of team-based teaching tools. The HEC approach combines problem resolution, effective communication and leadership skill-building.

Teamwork and Cross-Cultural Experience

Upon arrival to the HEC campus, participants are integrated into work groups containing four-to-five participants, enabling each participant to maximize his or her cultural diversity and experience. Work groups are given case studies reflecting real business situations, but often with missing and or conflicting information. The case resolution entails finding possible integrated solutions to business problems. In analyzing complex, uncertain situations where there is no single “black and white” solution, participants learn to overcome the hurdles of cultural diversity and differences in language in order to work out different approaches to problem solving. This learning experience prepares participants to become effective leaders in their future international business environment.

Language Skills

Language expresses and transmits culture. Language learning implies exposure to different cultures, and being able to understand them enables participants to adapt to a wide range of international business situations. Training executives to assume leadership positions in international business involves a sensitivity to language acquisition, and thus remains one of the cornerstones of the HEC MBA.

In our multicultural environment, participants are encouraged and expected to learn French as a second or third language. In fact, unless you are a native French speaker or already bilingual in French, French is compulsory for all participants during the first four months of the program. Moreover, French is offered to participants at all levels of competency in the language throughout the 16-month program. The Delaware MBA/MS Information Systems & Technology Management Dual Degree

The Department of Accounting & Management Information Systems, in cooperation with the Office of Graduate & Executive Programs offers a MBA/MS in Information Systems & Technology Management (IS&TM) dual degree option. The dual degree option allows the student to complete both the MBA and the IS&TM with a total of 60 credits. The MBA/MS: IS&TM combines the required courses in the MBA program with the required and elective courses in the MS in IS&TM. See sample curriculum. This program is jointly administered by the Alfred Lerner College of Business and Economics Graduate and Executive Programs office and the Department of Accounting & Management Information Systems.

Requirements for Admission

Students desiring to pursue the joint MBA/MS: IS&TM must apply directly to the degree program and must meet the admissions requirements of both programs (See the University catalog for those requirements). The admissions directors for each program will evaluate the application separately and will apply the same criteria as specified in their respective programs. The prospective student is encouraged to see the admissions policies for both programs in the graduate catalog. Whereas the MS: IS&TM program accepts both the GMAT and GRE exams, scores for the GMAT will be accepted by both programs.

The MBA/MS: IS&TM is a joint degree program. As such, the joint programs must be completed and the dual degree is conferred. Students admitted to the MBA/MS joint degree program who later decide they only want to complete one of the degrees must apply separately to the desired program for admission as a candidate in that program. Students who complete the single degree (MBA or MS: IS&TM) may not at a later date be admitted to the dual degree program. In such case the student would be required to complete all requirements for the second degree. A student who is initially admitted to either degree and who decides to pursue the dual degree must apply for change of degree to the MBA/MS dual degree prior to receiving the first degree and must complete the requirements for the dual degree prior to any degree being granted.

Requirements for the Dual Degree

The MBA/MS in IS&TM program combines the require courses for the MBA program with the additional required courses of the MS in IS&TM program. The MBA core and required courses make up 30 credits of the program, the additional 30 credits of course work are from the MS in IS&TM. The total 60 credit program includes no elective credits, therefore careful planning is required.

Students may apply for the MBA/MS in IS&TM on either a part-time or full-time basis. Full-time students are expected to complete the program in two years. Part-time students are expected to complete the program in approximately four years.

Transfers of coursework earned elsewhere, and waivers of courses are allowable under the same provisions as the MBA and MS in IS&TM programs separately. Regardless of course waivers, dual degree students must complete a minimum of 60 credits of coursework at the graduate level.

Students must maintain continuous enrollment in every regular semester (fall and spring) throughout their program unless by approved leave of absence.

Undergraduate Programs Overview

The undergraduate BS degree programs in Business Administration provide a wide road that prepares students for careers in the business and industry, as well as government and public corporations. The curriculum is designed to give students both a broad liberal arts background and a strong professional education.

In general, the first and second years for Business Administration majors consists of a flexible selection of humanities, liberal arts, mathematics, and social and natural science courses. During the third and fourth year, courses are concentrated in the professional business area, providing a focused path to each student’s destination. Within business administration, students select one of three majors offered through the department. Many students choose to double major with any combination of majors offered. These include:

The Department of Accounting and Management Information Systems offers a program leading to the Master of Science degree in Accounting. The objective of the M.S. in Accounting program is to extend the education of qualified students into advanced study in each of the major areas of the field of accounting (financial, managerial, information systems, auditing, and taxation), as well as in the supporting fields of finance and quantitative methods.

Why Pursue an MS Accounting Degree? Because you want to go further, the M.S. in Accounting provides advanced preparation for careers in public accounting, information systems consulting, industry, and government, and establishes a foundation for further study at the Ph.D. level in preparation for an academic career. Additional concentration toward more in-depth study in any of the five accounting areas is possible by the combination of elective courses and independent study/research with an interested faculty member.

FAQs

How does the accelerated M.B.A. work?
Accelerated students skip the first-year core and directly proceed to the second-year electives. Unlike students in the 2-year program, however, accelerated students take sixteen 3- or 4-credit electives. Your choice of focus areas is the same.

How long does the accelerated M.B.A. take?
If you are a full-time student taking a normal load of 4 courses per term, you’ll be done in 4 terms, or 15 months from start to finish. LCB does not offer graduate business courses in the summer, although it is possible to take 1-2 courses in Economics or Planning, Public Policy and Management. On a part-time basis it will take longer, of course.

Do I have to start the accelerated M.B.A. in the fall?
While a fall start date is preferred, students can also enter the accelerated program in winter or spring.

Is the accelerated M.B.A. degree worth less?
No! You’ll be receiving the same degree and your diploma will read the same as that for the two-year program.

What are the advantages of the accelerated M.B.A. ?
1. It takes less time and costs less.
2. You don’t have to rehash material you studied as an undergraduate.
3. You get to take more electives and can craft your program around several focus areas.

What are the disadvantages?
1. You miss out on the Strategic Planning Project of the first year.
2. As part of a much smaller cohort, you’ll be taking classes with students who entered the regular program a year earlier and thus have come to know each other well.
3. There’s less time to get ready for your job search.

Why study the HRM programme?

A career in Human Resource Management can be a particularly challenging one. As organisations seek to adapt to the threats and opportunities of accelerating environmental change, the management of human resources has acquired growing strategic significance. As an HRM specialist you will be required to have a wide understanding of organisations and people and the ability to translate organisational strategies into effective HR policies and practice. You will need expertise and analytical ability, together with a grasp of "the big picture".

The Human Resource Management programmes at Bristol Business School are designed to develop these skills and give you the confidence to succeed in your career. Both programmes have been running for many years and have an excellent "track record" borne out by the destinations of our former students.

Full or part time route?

Bristol Business School offers this Masters award as a full or part time route, with the flexibility to leave the programme at several exit points with a recognized qualification and graduate membership of the Chartered Institute of Personnel and Development (CIPD).

The full time route is an intensive 12-month programme, commencing in September. There is an option to complete the first nine months in order to achieve the Postgraduate Diploma and gain CIPD recognition. However, students usually elect to study for a further 3 months in order to complete a dissertation and gain the prestigious Masters award. Students attending the full time route are typically recent undergraduates, or mature students seeking a mid-career change.

The first is the Postgraduate Management Foundation (which covers the CIPD's Leadership & Management standards) which runs from September to August. The second stage, which runs from September to August, is the Postgraduate Diploma (which covers the CIPD's People Management & Development field, the electives and management project/CPD learning log). Successful completion of these two stages will give you Graduate membership of the CIPD and a UWE post-graduate Diploma in HRM. Further study and completion of a dissertation will enable you to achieve the full Master's award. The Master's stage takes up to 12 months to complete and commences in September.

Structure of the programme

Postgraduate Management Foundation

(covering the CIPD's Leadership & Management standards)

This stage provides an introduction to the theory and practice of management and the study of strategy and organisational analysis. There are 4 modules:

Managing People - which looks at the factors which impinge on organisational effectiveness, leadership, and personal managerial effectiveness.
Organisational Management - this module looks at landmark studies in the history of organisational thinking, change and culture management. The module also examines quality management and continuous improvement processes and initiatives.
Managing Information for Competitive Advantage - this module examines the role of information and systems structures in modern organisations, the use and construction of statistical data and accounting and finance principles.

On the full time programme these modules are taught at the beginning of the programme in the first term. There is a residential outdoor activities session in the first term, offering you an opportunity to develop personal and inter-personal skills whilst getting to know other members of the group.

On the part-time programme this course of study will last for the whole of the first academic year (September - August). It will require your attendance on one afternoon/evening a week or one full-day a week. There is a 2-day block release (non-residential) period of study as part of this programme during the year.

Postgraduate Diploma

(covering the CIPD's People Management & Development field, the electives, and the project/CPD log)

This stage consists of the following:

Human Resource Management & Development - which provides an integrative examination of the four main HRM disciplines: Employee Resourcing, Managing Reward, Employee Relations and Employee Development.
Elective choices which further enhance knowledge and development in key HRM areas. Students choose 4 electives from a choice which normally includes:

People Resourcing

Management & Career Development

Employee Relations

Managing Reward

Employment Law

Psychometric assessment

A project -either a management report or a dissertation (see below). The management report is around 6,000 words in length and is based on a project identified by the student and host or placement organisation. Students receive research methods tuition before beginning this project.
A continuous professional development learning log - in which students record their learning in a CPD record covering both learning on the course and in the workplace or placement organisation.
Skills workshops - these are designed to help develop the skills that underpin your personal and professional effectiveness. Skills workshops are normally attached to core and elective modules and typically include:

Interviewing (linked to HRM & Development)

Preparing for an Employment Tribunal (Employment Law elective)

Negotiation (Managing Reward elective)

Redundancy handling (Employee Relations elective)

More generic skills are also developed throughout the course, such as presentation skills, report-writing, group-working, problem-solving etc

On the full-time programme this phase of the programme runs in the autumn and spring terms. The project is based on an organisational placement which is a unique feature of the programme and a highlight for many students. The placement will be for either 5 weeks (management report) or 10 weeks (dissertation). You negotiate a project which is designed to develop your applied understanding and to be of real value to the host organisation. Placements in recent years have included blue chip companies in the manufacturing and financial services sectors, the building industry, retail sector, local government, central government agencies, education and the privatised utilities.

On the part-time programme this phase runs for the second academic year (September - August) and involves both day release and block release delivery. The project is normally based on the student's own employer, but alternative methods are available for students who are not currently in employment.

The Master's dissertation

This final phase runs over three terms and includes a research methods module which develops your research skills in preparation for your project. The dissertation is based either on a placement project (for full-time students or part-time students not currently in employment) or the employing organisation for part-time students. The dissertation is around 15,000 - 18,000 words in length. Students will be allocated an individual dissertation supervisor for the duration of the research.

Students completing a Master's dissertation do not have to complete a management report as well.

Teaching and Learning

The MAHRM encourages learning through a wide variety of participative and learner-centred methods. These include syndicate work, group discussions and presentations, student-led seminar activities, analysis of case studies, guided private study, experiential learning exercises, and practical computing and statistical exercises.

The MAHRM is an intensive programme and you are unlikely to complete it successfully unless you allow time for reading and preparation. You should aim to allow a minimum of 15 hours study per week on the full-time programme and 6 hours on the part-time programme.

Class based study is supplemented by reading from set texts or further reading lists, and additional preparation is needed to read case studies or prepare for other presentations and activities. Some of these will require group tasks so you must be able to meet outside the timetabled sessions on occasions.

Entry Requirements

Full time route

Entry is open to all first-degree graduates of UK universities in any subject. Applications from candidates with other qualifications are welcome. If you are not preparing for or do not currently possess a first degree, you will be asked to complete a written exercise in your own time as evidence of your suitability for study at postgraduate level.

We welcome applications from international students, both from within the EU and elsewhere. Applicants should hold qualifications comparable to the entry requirements for UK students.

Proficiency in spoken and written English is essential. Applicants whose first language is not English require a qualification such as Cambridge/British Council English Language Testing Service (IELTS) with a score of 6.5 or above, or to have achieved a TOEFL score of at least 600.

As this programme is designed to satisfy CIPD requirements, no exemptions are allowed from elements (e.g. Employment Law) whose application is restricted to part or all of the UK.

Part time route

Minimum entry requirements are a good degree in any subject or successful completion of an assessment exercise designed to assist you in deciding whether you are ready for study at post-graduate level.

Accreditation of prior learning

Accreditation of prior learning may be possible if you hold other Master's level qualifications which cover at least 80% of the learning outcomes for a module on the programme. The credit rating of the module you are offering as equivalent must be the same (or greater) than that of the MAHRM programme. You will be asked to complete an accreditation of prior learning application form and submit a certificate showing the pass in the module and a syllabus showing the learning outcomes and assessment arrangements. Accreditation is normally only given for "current qualifications" ie those completed within the last 5 years. The Programme Tutor will be happy to advise you about the APL requirements.

Assessment

The MAHRM uses a wide range of assessment methods including assignments, group presentations or projects, examinations and class-based tests. Our assessment methods are chosen to resemble the types of work faced by professional practitioners.

Teaching team

The MAHRM is taught by well-qualified staff who are used to working with post-graduate students. All of the tutors are established researchers in the areas in which they teach and/or have experience in consultancy.

About this 'new' programme

Bristol Business School has successfully run an MSc Management programme for many years. However in recognition of changes in working practice and the extensive hours that many professionals now work, this programme has recently been redesigned and restructured. The new programme provides the following features:

the full MA programme now has only nine modules enabling in-depth study and integration as well as requiring fewer student assessments
a range of optional subjects to enable specialisation in your chosen area of management
assessment linked to your current role and organisation
a choice of study routes - the programme is now available via one evening session per week or through three-day blocks, or a combination of both. You can choose whichever route suits you or your employer the best

This newly designed flexible programme will enable you to develop management capabilities in order to complement your specialist expertise, developing and continually upgrading your portfolio of skills and knowledge.

The programme will enable you to link theory and practice relevant to managing in today's organisations. The staff who teach on this programme have a wide range of experience of researching, consulting and working with a variety of organisations including those in the private, public and not for profit sectors.

How is the programme structured?

We expect most students to complete the full Master's programme, which includes taught modules at Certificate and Diploma phases (normally six core modules and two elective modules chosen from a variety of options) and a final dissertation module in the Master's phase.

If for any reason you are unable to complete the programme you can leave with a recognised university qualification providing you have built up sufficient credits (either Postgraduate Certificate or Postgraduate Diploma) and you may be able to return to complete the full Master's programme at a later date.

Entry to the programme is normally at Postgraduate Certificate level with most students commencing in late September each year. The six core modules at Certificate and Diploma phases cover the areas of:

In addition you will normally be able to choose two electives from a variety of options covering contemporary issues in management such as:

In the final Master's phase you will undertake a dissertation module where you will be able to carry out a research project on a topic of your choice.

When will I have to attend?

This programme has been designed to offer maximum flexibility and you can choose when you attend, depending on the speed at which you want to proceed through the programme. It is possible to study in the evening, or by block sessions, or via a combination of the two. You could expect to complete the programme in 33 months, or 24 via the fast track route.

The evening session runs from 4.00pm - 8.30pm (with a half hour break) one day per week. The three-day block sessions will take place during October, mid November, late January/early February and mid March, usually on a Wednesday to Friday. Prior to starting the programme additional information will be sent to you, enabling you to choose how you wish to study. Those wishing to fast-track through this programme should discuss this with the Programme Director at the time of application as this route is dependent on student numbers and will require additional attendance on block modules in the early summer.

The Dissertation

Entry criteria

You should have:

A degree or equivalent business professional qualification, or
An HND in Business Studies or equivalent business professional award at NVQ 4, plus two years of relevant work experience or
At least two years in a management role with in-house management education/development. You may be interviewed prior to acceptance and asked to undertake an additional pre-entry assessment.

How will I be assessed?

The programme primarily uses continuous assessment, chiefly through marked assignments which are either organisation or role focused and of great practical benefit to you as an individual and to your organisation.

How will I learn?

You will be encouraged to learn through a wide variety of participative and learner-centred methods which include; case studies, syndicate-based exercises, group experiential learning exercises, presentations, formal lectures, and self-directed independent study.

MA Structure

Main Features of the Awards

The postgraduate awards have been designed to offer both flexibility and academic coherence. The programmes are modular in structure, organised around a range of core and optional modules, which include Research Methods, Economic Theory, Econometrics, Critical Political Economy, Development Economics and Finance.

To achieve the MA you will also need to complete a 15,000 word dissertation. The dissertation exhibits the in-depth knowledge in your specialised area, which you will have gained throughout the taught part of the programme. The dissertation also demonstrates the abilities of analysis and critical appraisal. You will be provided with a dissertation supervisor to provide support throughout the completion of this module.

You will be eligible for the Postgraduate Diploma in Economics on passing the taught modules and eligible for the award of Masters having achieved a pass in the dissertation in addition to having passed the taught modules.

Aims and Objectives of the Programme

By the end of the programme, you will have acquired a thorough knowledge of the subject and its application. You will also have developed research skills and the theoretical knowledge needed to carry out research in related disciplines, or apply theoretical knowledge in a business environment.

Methods of Assessment

We use a variety of different assessment methods including traditional essays and examinations in addition to student presentations, debates and group work.

Teaching and Learning

The courses are designed to allow flexible approaches to teaching and learning. The modules are taught using a combination of lectures, seminars, student presentations and computer workshops. Teaching takes place two days a week (days to be confirmed) and part-time students will only need to attend for one day a week. All Masters Awards start in September and finish in either August (12 months) or the following January (16 months) depending on the student’s choice with regard to the supervision arrangements for their dissertation.

Entry Requirements

A relevant first degree (minimum lower second) or equivalent is normally necessary. However, other qualifications or experience which demonstrates that the candidate possesses appropriate knowledge and skills at honours degree standard may be accepted. BBA:

The major in accounting is designed to give the student an understanding of the theory of accounting as it is used in our society Students in this major are prepared for accounting careers in private, public or governmental organizations. Accounting education also provides an excellent background for non-business professions such as law, and is a sound basis for advancement to top-level management positions.

MAcc:

The Master of Accountancy (MAcc) degree prepares students for careers in the profession as well as satisfying eligibility requirements for the Certified Public Accountant's Examination (CPA Exam) in the State of Georgia. The MAcc allows students to continue their studies in the accounting area, specializing in either the Audit, Audit/Systems, or Taxation. Also available for qualified UGA BBA-Accounting students is the Five-Year (BBA/MAcc) Program. This is an "early enrollment" program available only to currently enrolled UGA accounting majors. It allows admission during the student's senior year and the ability to complete the BBA and MAcc degree requirements simultaneously.

PhD:

The Ph.D. degree in the Tull School of Accounting is designed to prepare students to conduct scholarly research in accounting and to eventually take positions at other research universities. The program is individually planned with each student by his/her major professor and advisory committee. The student and the committee evaluate previous work and designate sufficient coursework to provide the necessary proficiency to do research and teach in the chosen field of specialization.

Thank you for your interest in the J. M. Tull School of Accounting's graduate accounting programs at the University of Georgia. The Tull School of Accounting is ranked 14th nationally among all public institutions’ graduate accounting programs. We offer both the post-baccalaureate degree program, known as the Master of Accountancy (MAcc) and our special Five-Year Program (BBA/MAcc). The MAcc is a 30-semester hour program for applicants with an undergraduate degree in accounting. The Five-Year degree allows UGA accounting majors the opportunity to complete both the Bachelor of Business Administration and MAcc degrees concurrently.

Applications are accepted for admission for both Fall and Spring sessions. Summer admission is only available to those candidates who are interning and wish to receive graduate credit for their experience. International applicants are not eligible for summer admission due to visa restrictions regarding an internship during a student's first semester in a graduate program.

The MAcc Admissions Committee recommends that candidates have, at a minimum, a 550 GMAT and 3.00 overall GPA and 3.00 accounting GPA to receive serious consideration. The combination of increased number of applications and limited number of seats in the program, forces our Admissions Committee to be extremely selective. The current MAcc class average is a 610 GMAT with 3.60 overall GPA and 3.60 accounting GPA.

Once you apply and pay your application fee, you will be able to follow the progress of your application via an “Admissions Tracking Screen” provided by the Graduate School. Graduate admission to the University is a collaborative process between the UGA Graduate School and the
J. M. Tull School of Accounting. Applications are reviewed as a group at dates determined by the MAcc Admissions Committee. The Committee will evaluate the application file and forward a recommendation to the Graduate School. The Graduate School reviews the recommendation and makes the final determination on the applicant’s status and will send a final notification by mail.
