Engineering BS/MBA Concurrent Degree, Iowa State University - ASM-A

Engineering BS/MBA Concurrent Degree

The Iowa State University College of Engineering and the College of Business offer an integrated, concurrent program leading to a Bachelor of Science degree and Master of Business Administration (MBA) degree. The Engineering/MBA program is available to undergraduate students majoring in civil, computer, electrical, industrial, or mechanical engineering.

The Engineering/MBA concurrent degree program reduces by one year the normal time period for completing both degrees separately.

Rationale
Today’s successful engineers often need strong business management skills to complement their degree in engineering. These skills are especially important for engineers who are interested in working for technology companies, launching their own business ventures, or pursuing non-traditional jobs such as consulting. Generally, engineers will need highly developed technical and advanced business skills as their careers progress. The MBA may give engineers a competitive advantage for advancement or lead to accelerated opportunities for growth into management positions. Enhanced business skills may open a more diverse offering of career choices.

Overview
The Engineering/MBA concurrent degree program offers students the opportunity to integrate study in engineering and business management. Both the Bachelor of Science and the MBA are awarded to successful candidates of the concurrent degree program.

The Engineering/MBA program is designed to be completed in a minimum of five academic years or ten semesters. While the program can be finished in five years (ten semesters), the actual time for completion may be longer depending upon semester course loads, internships, and course sequencing. Careful planning between the engineering student and the academic advisor is essential throughout the program.

The program requires engineering students to take a slightly accelerated program through the first six semesters in order to complete the general education requirements. The remaining four semesters integrate the engineering major requirements and the MBA courses. Twelve credits will be shared in common and will fulfill the degree requirements for both the engineering bachelor’s and the MBA degrees.

Summer study is possible, although students are strongly encouraged to complete at least two internships or co-ops in engineering and business for practical experience.

Preparing for the Engineering/MBA
Engineering students interested in pursuing the MBA need to demonstrate exemplary academic performance throughout their undergraduate program. Mastery of the knowledge and skills in coursework taken in communications, economic theory, global and diversity perspectives, statistical data analysis, and the core professional curriculum is of particular importance. Engineering students are not required to have additional coursework in business in preparing for the MBA.

Student Selection
The Engineering/MBA concurrent degree program is open to only those currently enrolled Iowa State University students who have completed three years of their engineering degree program majoring in civil, computer, electrical, industrial, or mechanical engineering.

The program is demanding and admission is very selective. Students are expected to exhibit superior intellectual ability, strong leadership attributes, and must be highly motivated and career-focused. Although not absolute minimums, admitted students will typically have earned a cumulative GPA of 3.50 or above and have scored 650 or higher on the Graduate Management Admissions Test (GMAT). All application materials, however, are taken into account collectively in the applicant review and student selection process.

Advisors for the Engineering/MBA concurrent degree are available for consultation about the advisability of applying to the program.
Students must have completed a stipulated number of engineering credits from Iowa State to be eligible for the program.

Sample Study Plans

Applying to the Engineering/MBA
Engineering students interested in the Engineering/MBA concurrent degree program must apply to the MBA by January 15 of their junior year. The following application materials are required:

Graduate College Application

Official transcripts
Graduate Management Test (GMAT) scores
Three letters of recommendation
Essay responses
Resume

Admission into the Engineering/MBA concurrent degree will only be considered for the fall semester of the student’s senior year. If admitted to the MBA program, students then complete a concurrent enrollment request form.

Admitted students are classified as graduate students when concurrent enrollment begins and are subsequently assessed graduate tuition and fees.

Fox School of Business, Temple University - T Update

The Fox School of Business at Temple University has redefined graduate business education through the development of the Fox MBA and the Fox Professional MBA.

The Fox MBA is a full-time, two year, cohort program and The Fox Professional MBA provides management education to working professionals on a part-time basis. Both programs prepare individuals to assume leadership roles in corporations, as well as in governmental and non-governmental organizations which also require business management skills.

The Fox School also offers specialized Masters Degrees which provide an educational experience with a more concentrated scope in a specific business discipline. The hallmarks of the Fox School’s commitment to graduating dynamic, qualified and skilled students are its focus on four fundamental principles located to the left. These principles are reflected in the content and delivery of your graduate business education.

Integrated Curriculum

Students experience a rigorous introduction to management perspectives in the key disciplines on which business decisions are made. These core courses cover disciplines such as accounting, finance, marketing, operations management, management information systems and economics. The instructional approach to these courses involves presenting a common set of issues, problems or circumstances which are addressed across the courses, making use of the case study method

Real World Learning

The cornerstone of experiential learning in the Fox MBA and Professional MBA is our Enterprise Management Consulting Practicum or EMC Practicum. This six credit course enables students to deliver professional level consulting services to companies and organizations throughout the Northeast business corridor of the US. Guided by faculty mentors, students experience the demands of starting a new venture, developing a new product or entering a new market.

The realities of business management are demonstrated through the many corporate and governmental speakers who address our students in the classroom as well as through networking events organized by the Fox School’s Graduate Career Management Center. Also, faculty and administration ensure that students are informed of the wealth of speaker engagements open to our students from such organizations as the World Affairs Council, International Chambers of Commerce and professional organizations such as the American Marketing Association and the Society for Human Resources Management.

Personalized Service

Throughout a student’s experience at the Fox School of Business, specific attention is paid to those services which will ensure his or her success. Academic and career advisors help plan their educational experience and develop a strategy for managing their career, through a personalized Leadership Development Program. Faculty and business mentors help students understand how the theory of the classroom applies to the reality of the work place.

Value

Return on Investment: Temple University, The Fox School’s parent institution, is affiliated with the State of Pennsylvania. Because of this state relationship, tuition costs are quite reasonable when compared to many other institutions.

At current tuition rates, in-state students can expect to pay about $27,500 USD for a Fox MBA degree , while out-of-state and international students can expect to pay $40,500 USD in tuition for the entire degree program. Tuition for Specialized Masters Degree programs can range from $15,000 to $25,000 for Pennsylvania Residents and $22,000 to $36,000 for non-Pennsylvania residents, depending upon the number of pre-requisite courses needed to complete the program.

The Terry MBA Program, University of Georgia - JY

21st Century Leadership

The Terry MBA Program has two objectives. The first is to provide Terry MBA candidates with the knowledge and skills valued in the marketplace for post-graduate employment and long-term career advancement. The second is to provide our graduates with a lasting competitive advantage ... a set of seven leadership competencies that will not only differentiate them from other MBAs, but also add meaning and satisfaction to their lives.

At the heart of effective business leadership is business acumen--having advanced cognitive abilities to comprehend, apply, analyze, synthesize and evaluate business solutions. The first year core curriculum, comprising 26.5 credit hours of required coursework and 3 credit hours of electives, provides a solid foundation for today's business environment.

The Terry MBA Program has systematically integrated leadership development opportunities across the curriculum and throughout the MBA experience. In collaboration with Terry's Institute for Leadership Advancement, we have selected seventeen measurable components of leadership for development and assessment.

Rankings
The Terry MBA program is consistently ranked in the Top 50 among all MBA programs in the United States by such major publications as U.S. News & World Report, Business Week, Financial Times, and The Wall Street Journal. Terry MBA students participate in many national competitions each year, such as the National Black MBA DaimlerChrysler case competition, the Net Impact Sustainability case competition, MootCorp, and the National Associate of Industrial and Office Properties case competition. They frequently finish first or second against other high ranking programs.

Eligibility and Prerequisites
The two-year MBA program is designed for non-business baccalaureate degree holders and business majors from non-AACSB International accredited institutions. The program involves four semesters of full-time study with fall semester admission only. While no prior business coursework is required of two-year students, it is often advantageous for incoming students to acquaint themselves with several functional areas of business prior to enrollment. Students in past years have benefited most from introductory coursework in accounting, statistics and economics.

A solid foundation in math will be needed to be successful in the program. This will require you to assess your quantitative background and, if you feel it is necessary, to prepare yourself for the program by taking a business math course.
