TME - Rotman School of Management, University of Toronto

THE ROTMAN ADVANTAGE

If you’re considering an MBA, we already know that you’re ambitious, that you’re seeking a significant boost to your career, and that you want to make a real impact on the world around you. With a proliferation of programs to choose from, why should you choose the Rotman MBA? Because in the world of business education, Rotman has one crucial advantage that no other school can match: it’s an innovative approach that we call Integrative Thinking.

A New Way to Think

What is Integrative Thinking? At Rotman, we believe that in addition to a solid grounding in the traditional disciplines, today’s business leaders must develop an ability
to constructively face the tensions of opposing mental models, and instead of choosing one at the expense of the other, generate creative resolutions of the tensions to form
new and better models.

When Dean Roger Martin left a successful consulting career to take the helm of the
Rotman School in 1998, he was propelled by his belief that management education and its formulaic approaches to problem-solving had not kept pace with the modern economy.
He set out to develop a bold new model for business education, leading the Financial Times to call him the “pioneer of the big picture”.

At Rotman, students master all the functional areas of business, but they also learn to go beyond them to consider how they interrelate, approaching each challenge with creativity and a willingness to take risks. Instead of applying existing models, they learn to create new, more powerful models that capture business in all its complexity.

It’s a groundbreaking approach to management education that can help you shape your business — and your world — for the better. We invite you to be a part of it.

Your Future, Reimagined

It’s an exciting time to be at the Rotman School. Located in downtown Toronto, North America’s third largest financial centre and the world's most multicultural city, and part of the University of Toronto, Canada’s top teaching and research university, Rotman has all the advantages of its global peers, plus a bold new vision for business education that can’t be found anywhere else.
Whether your aim is to start your own business, accelerate your career or find a new direction, you've come to the right place. At the Rotman School, our goal is to provide you with a transformational learning experience that empowers you to think through the complexities of modern business and drive action in a quickly-changing world.

Our program will transform your life and dramatically expand your potential, giving you the knowledge and skills you need to become a high-value decision maker in the global economy.

We wouldn’t have it any other way.

Where We Stand

BusinessWeek ranks Rotman in the “International Top Ten”
(October 2006)

The Financial Times ranks Rotman:
27th among the top 100 MBA programs in the world
Top 16 in North America
Top 7 worldwide for finance
23rd worldwide for research output
(January 2007)

Consistently the most quoted business school in the Canadian media, with more than 50 per cent share of voice (Cormex media report)

What People are Saying

“Rotman’s program aims to help MBA students learn how to build new, flexible models better suited for a globalized business world. The unusual approach seems to be working. While many B-schools are experiencing a decline in applications, at Rotman they’ve been up 30 per cent since 2001.” BusinessWeek Online, September 5, 2005
“What the Rotman School is doing under Roger Martin’s leadership is helping to redefine the MBA for the future. It is incumbent upon us to reinvent the MBA for the Creative Economy; and now at Rotman and a few other places, people are beginning to figure out how to do that.” Richard Florida, author of The Rise of The Creative Class, in Rotman Magazine, May 2006
“Managers who want to ‘get’ the new innovation paradigm should check out [Rotman’s] MBA and exec-ed programs.” Bruce Nussbaum, BusinessWeek Online, March 7, 2005)

Year Two: The second year would be spent taking upper year elective courses in the LL.B. program, including the Second Year Compulsory Course of Appellate Advocacy – Moots

Year Three: The third year (academic year of May to May) would be spent fulfilling all of the course obligations in the Queen’s Full-Time MBA Program

Year Four: The fourth year would be spent fulfilling the remaining course requirements in the LL.B. Program.

TSQWANML - MBA Program at Queen's School of Business

Program Overview

Queen’s full-time MBA is an incomparable and transformational learning experience.
At Queen’s we recognize that not everyone comes to an MBA program with the same background, the same talents and skills, the same experiences or even the same aspirations.

It stands to reason that a “one size fits all” approach is simply impractical.

Queen’s has developed a unique and exciting new approach to learning – built on the four pillars outlined below– that provides a level of customization that is simply not available in other MBA programs.

Transformational Team-Based Learning
While many MBA programs tout the importance of teamwork, Queen’s is one of a select few in the world that formally assign students to teams for the duration of the program, providing an experiential opportunity to develop and hone critical team and leadership skills.

Integrated Cross-Functional Thinking
Queen’s MBA curriculum has been designed to not only provide a solid understanding of management fundamentals, but also to demonstrate how solving problems and capitalizing on opportunities requires integrated, cross-functional thinking. Using a combination of class instruction, case studies, simulations and real-world projects, Queen’s professors teach as a team to ensure an integrated approach to learning.

Personal Learning Pathway™
Beyond a thorough knowledge of management fundamentals or “hard skills”, success in business also requires an array of “soft skills”. These include strategic thinking, effective listening, negotiation, and communication to name just a few. Using a unique and innovative assessment tool, Queen’s is able to determine your strengths, as well as your developmental needs, in these critical soft skill areas. Using this information and your career aspirations, Queen’s then develops your Personal Learning Pathway™ – a customized package of courses, personal coaching, and personal development opportunities to suit your individual needs.

International Exchange Opportunities
In today’s world, it is critical that MBA students be prepared for the global business environment. In addition to courses on International Business, Queen’s MBA students have the option of an international exchange during the final module of the program at one of our international business school partners. The list of international partners is being developed. Currently, we have agreements in place with University of Mannheim (Germany) and Indian School of Business (India).

Elective Streams
Additionally, Queen’s MBA offers four elective streams – Consulting & Project Management, Marketing, Finance, and Innovation & Entrepreneurship.

TSCRBB - Undergraduate Commerce at DeGroote School of Business, McMaster University

Program Overview - B.Com/Hon.B.Com
The School of Business offers two programs, each of which spans four levels of study. The Honours Commerce program, which leads to the Honours Bachelor of Commerce (Honours B.Com.) degree, provides substantial concentration in business subjects beyond the essential core of studies. The Commerce program, which leads to the Bachelor of Commerce (B.Com.) degree, contains essential grounding in business subjects and promotes the broadening of horizons through studies in Social Sciences, Humanities and Science. These programs are referred to collectively as the Commerce programs.

In addition, the School of Business and the Faculty of Engineering offer a five-year joint program for the Bachelor of Engineering and Management (B.Eng.Mgt.) degree. This program provides a full course of study in Engineering and includes a complete core of business subjects. Details concerning the B.Eng.Mgt. program and its academic regulations can be found in Faculty of Engineering section of the Undergraduate Calendar, or visit the Engineering and Management website at www.eng.mcmaster.ca/engandmgt/.

Also, the School of Business participates in the Committee of Instruction and offers courses for the B.A. program in Labour Studies which is described in Faculty of Social Sciences section of the Undergraduate Calendar.

In Level I, a student who wishes to pursue either of the Commerce programs establishes a foundation in behavioural science, computer science, economics and mathematics. Additionally, elective work is required, including cross cultural/language courses selected from a menu provided at the time of registration. While this course of study is prescribed in Business I, a student who establishes a similar background in the Level I program of another Faculty may also be considered for admission to Level II (Commerce II). Such a student should consult with the Academic Programs Office, School of Business.

A student must gain admission to Commerce II in order to proceed towards the Honours B.Com. or B.Com. degrees. In Level II a wide range of business subjects (accounting, finance, marketing, human resources/labour relations and management information systems) are introduced and further course work in economics is required. Elective work is taken from non-Commerce courses.

While the same core of required Commerce courses is completed in Level II, the Commerce programs diverge at Level III. In the Honours Commerce program, about two-thirds of the work is in Commerce courses, with the remainder of the load coming from electives outside the Faculty. In the Commerce program, about one-half of the course work is in each of Commerce subjects and non-Commerce electives.

In the revised programs, the School of Business has stressed the importance of breadth of knowledge. Students will be required to take courses in a variety of business disciplines, thus giving them a sound understanding of business functions and their relationships. They will also have exposure to international and cross-cultural issues. This will provide students with the knowledge needed for the world of global organizations. Prior to graduation, students will be required to complete two courses from the International / Cross-Cultural / Language menu.

Students can take Business I and the Commerce programs on a full-time or part-time basis. Progression to the next level is at the end of the successful completion of the 30 units of work that pertain to the lower level. Please note that only a few Commerce courses are offered in the evenings or in the summer sessions.

A student with an undergraduate degree will not be admitted or readmitted to either of the Commerce programs. Such students may wish to apply for admission to the MBA program.

TPWLPN - MBA in Public Management Stream, University of Alberta

Why should you enter the Alberta MBA Public Management Stream? We know the practice of public management:

Leading and managing in the complex and ambiguous world of public service presents a unique challenge. Ideas meet practice in the Public Management Stream.
Outstanding faculty lead discussions, with students and practitioners, about research-based public management concepts and actual practice.
You will learn to think strategically and to develop the analytical skills, problem-solving strategies, and consensus-building techniques critical for success in the public sector.
To sharpen insight and interest, speakers in seminars and workshops offered in the MBA program will frequently address public sector issues.

Study Areas
How can organizations reconcile the complexity and ambiguity of public goals in order to plan effectively for the future? Does this ambiguity preclude the effective measurement of performance?
How are policy decisions made in the Canadian context? How is consensus developed around public goals and strategies? Do special interest groups steer the public agenda? Why and how does business influence public policy?
What strategies can be used to close the gap between policy objectives and results? How do public sector managers design and implement change strategies?
How is public enterprise effectively organized in order to deliver service excellence? How can alternative forms of service delivery be managed? Is there a role for private-public partnerships?
How can the public sector attract and retain people with the requisite skills and knowledge? How can compensation plans be used to motivate successful achievement of government goals?

Career opportunities
Alberta MBA graduates who completed the Public Management Stream will have the skills to work in leadership positions in the public sector. You will have developed attributes key to advancing your career to senior managerial and executive levels within federal, provincial or local government, a health authority or a non-profit agency, or to making a career change from the private to public sector. Alternatively, if you choose a career in the private sector you will have acquired knowledge of the public sector and public policy processes that will enable you to be an effective advocate for your company or social interests.

The Program
Students acquire the fundamentals of management through a comprehensive set of core business management courses. Building on this foundation, strength in public sector management is developed through specifically designed electives. In these courses, you analyze key issues in policy development, implementation and management. You learn to think creatively and make decisions in the complex and ambiguous environment of public sector. Other electives in relevant and challenging disciplines further develop leadership and management skills.

In a featured project course, theory is applied to a current issue. Under the guidance of faculty, students in this project course will work with a public or non-profit sector organization to understand, analyze and influence the resolution of a current problem in public policy development, implementation or management.

TPLMY - MBA/LLB Joint Degree at University of Alberta

Strengthen your position in the field of law with a solid foundation in management and an understanding of the world of business. The MBA/LLB joint program was developed by two of the University of Alberta’s most prestigious faculties, the Alberta School of Business and the Faculty of Law, for individuals seeking a career defined by the tradition of law and the application of management practices.
Historically, the disciplines of business and law have been closely associated in both the public and private sector. In our global economy, businesses now deal with more complex issues concerning government regulations and international trade policies. With the growth in the size of law firms, lawyers are faced with new administrative challenges of managing a professional service firm. Our MBA/LLB joint program delivers the skills to improve the effectiveness of managers, policy makers, and legal advisors by providing students with strong management skills and an in-depth specialization in law.

The Alberta School of Business in partnership with the Faculty of Law offers the joint MBA/LLB that can be completed full-time in four years, one year less than taking each degree separately. This unique program allows individuals with an undergraduate degree in any area, the opportunity to combine management courses with studies in law.

Partner – Faculty of Law
The Faculty of Law is renowned across Canada for its continued commitment to high academic achievement and assisting individuals with building rewarding careers. Created in 1912, the Faculty of Law is the oldest law school in Western Canada. The Faculty has grown into a dynamic and innovative institution.

For over eight decades, the Faculty of Law has helped launch the careers of many who have had a profound influence on their fellow citizens, our society and our country. Three graduates have gone on to the Supreme Court of Canada, one has been Premier and many others have been appointed to the judiciary and to Cabinet, and some have been named to the Order of Canada. Their outstanding careers and accomplishments in public and private life speak eloquently for the worth of the Faculty’s legal education and the value of the degrees.

Summer Internships
Students in the MBA/LLB program have the option to complete a four-month summer work internship as part of their MBA course requirements. Among the companies and government departments that students have worked for over the past years are Alberta Innovation and Science, Research Services Office, Alberta Energy Utility Board and Bennett Jones.

Career Opportunities
Graduates of this intensive program are well prepared for demanding and worthwhile careers in both the legal and business professions particularly in areas where the two disciplines coincide. In the past, graduates have accepted positions in government service and politics, taxation, finance and accounting, labour-management relations, environmental control, urban development, general management, and corporate general counsel.

The Program
The program structure and the focus of studies during the four years vary depending on when a student is admitted into the joint program. Typically two years are spent in law, one year in the MBA program and a joint year combining courses from both areas. Students currently enrolled in the law program may apply to the MBA and joint program after completing their first or second year of studies. MBA students completing their first year may also apply for admission.

Courses in the MBA will cover the fundamentals of accounting, economics, finance, marketing, strategy and organizational behaviour. Students can select MBA electives to complement their studies in law.

TPUB - The Alberta MBA Part-Time Program

Why an Alberta MBA?
A Masters Degree in Business Administration represents a significant achievement and valuable credential for anyone seeking to advance their career with a focus on business issues. The Alberta MBA program allows you the flexibility to pursue knowledge in a wide range of topics – from Finance to Marketing, International Business to Natural Resource Management within a specialization, a joint degree program or as a general program.

Career Management

The Alberta MBA equips students with the knowledge needed to function well in a corporate or entrepreneurial environment. Most graduates continue working with their current employer and use the MBA to propel themselves up the corporate ladder, however some graduates have used the MBA as a launching pad for a career change.

The Program

The Alberta MBA is a challenging and rigorous program that demands a significant investment of time and energy but pays dividends many times over in knowledge, understanding, skills, and strong friendships that last the length of the program and beyond. When taken on a part-time basis, it permits students to pursue the degree at their pace. Students typically complete the program within four years. However, the 57-credit program must be completed within a maximum of six years. The part-time program offers all of the benefits of the full-time program, but allows flexibility in the number of courses taken each term.

With only a small number of students accepted each year, the Alberta MBA provides for a personalized and high-quality experience which is further enhanced by the program’s faculty, many of them winner’s of teaching and other excellence awards.

During the fall and winter terms, courses in the part-time program are offered once a week in the evening in a three-hour block. During the summer months (May to August), select courses are offered in a six-week format (twice a week) or as a one-week, all-day intensive course, permitting you to catch up or move ahead.

The first part of the Alberta MBA consists mostly of a pre-set schedule of business and economics basics carefully designed to establish the necessary foundation for the elective portion of the program. Areas covered include: accounting, business strategy, economics, finance, management science, marketing, and organizational behaviour. For those with previous business training, these courses will serve as a welcome refresher, but will also provide a challenge by going beyond previously acquired knowledge and by presenting current findings and theories.

Teamwork is an essential element of the program and part-time students often find themselves teaming up with the same people course after course, building valuable friendships and an even more valuable resource and support network.

Almost halfway into the program, there already is an opportunity for some elective coursework. Some of these electives will provide the basis for so-called “second-year courses” and should thus be chosen with further coursework in mind.

If you want to pursue a specialization or stream in International Business, Technology Commercialization, Natural Resources and Energy, Public Management, or Sports and Leisure Management, you will need to submit a letter of intent as you near completion of approximately half of the core courses, outlining your goals and suitability for the specialization. More information on the specializations can be found by clicking here and choosing from the links in the specialization section.

Joint graduate degrees are also offered in cooperation with the faculties of Law and Engineering, and the departments of Agriculture and Forestry. While it would be possible to take some of the joint MBA/LLB program as a part-time student, the majority of this joint degree program would require full-time attendance. More information on joint degrees can be found by clicking here and choosing from the links in the joint degree section.

Second year courses come from a wide variety of subjects, giving you an opportunity to fine-tune your degree with respect to your interests and opportunities you wish to explore. A capstone business strategy course which brings together previously learned knowledge and seeks to apply it to comprehensive cases and issues, is the only common requirement for each student in the second year portion of the program.

From part-time to full-time or vice versa
Sometime after commencing their studies on a part-time basis, students may wish to switch from a part-time course load to a full-time course load to accelerate the remainder of their studies. This is a possibility at certain points in the program but should be discussed with the MBA Programs office.

Pursue a professional designation

While taking courses towards the completion of the MBA degree you can also lay the groundwork for obtaining a professional designation. For example, a number of the core MBA courses fulfill some of the core requirements for admission to the Certified Management Accountant (CMA) entrance examination whereas the course “Introduction to Management Consulting” satisfies a portion of the requirements for the Certified Management Consultant (CMC) designation. Some students have also opted for the completion of the exams required for the Chartered Financial Analyst designation.

Past graduates have found employment with the Alberta Government, in private industry or have started their own ventures – either returning to their previous careers or making a desired career change.

A stepping stone towards a promising career is the opportunity to pursue an internship in the four months between the end of the first year and the beginning of the second year. With assistance from MBA Career Services, you can choose from a number of employers in the government, oil and gas, banking, or other sectors.

The Program
The Alberta MBA is a challenging and rigorous program that demands a significant investment of time and energy but pays dividends many times over in knowledge, understanding, skills, and strong friendships that last the length of the program and beyond.

With only a small number of students accepted each year, the Alberta MBA provides for a personalized and high-quality experience which is further enhanced by the program’s faculty, many of them winner’s of teaching and other excellence awards.

The first year of the two-year Alberta MBA consists mostly of a pre-set schedule of business and economics basics carefully designed to establish the necessary foundation for the elective portion of the program. For those with previous business training, these courses will serve as a welcome refresher, but will also provide a challenge by going beyond previously acquired knowledge and by presenting current findings and theories.

Team work in all of the core courses is an essential element of the program and great care is taken at the beginning of the program in arriving at groups that are both diverse and complementary. During orientation, the teams are formed and members are given the chance to get to know each other without the demands of the program that will soon be upon them.

In the second half of the first year, there already is an opportunity for some elective coursework. Some of these electives will provide the basis for second-year courses and should thus be chosen with further coursework in mind.

If you want to pursue a specialization or stream in International Business, Technology Commercialization, Natural Resources and Energy, Public Management, or Sports and Leisure Management, you will need to submit a letter of application during the first semester outlining your goals and suitability to the specialization. Experience learning internationally

Some students may choose to enhance their understanding of business issues by participating in an international exchange or the International Study Tour. More information on these options is made available at the beginning of the program and is also available online.

TBV - Undergraduate Degrees in Accounting & Finance at Glasgow University

Why this Department at this University?

In "The Good University Guide" issued by The Times, UK, this department is rated top in Scotland and 5th in the UK. The different Universities were ranked by the overall combined score from four indicators: assessments of teaching quality and research, average A-Level/Higher scores of entrants and destinations. The destinations figure is the percentage of graduates who go on to graduate-type jobs or further study. While being delighted with this result, we are committed to aim even higher.

The Degree.

The Department of Accounting & Finance offers the following degree, Bachelor of Accountancy, (BAcc). (Bachelor of Accountancy and Law has been withdrawn, with effect from September 2005.)

Bachelor of Accountancy includes

BAcc Accountancy
BAcc Accountancy with Finance
BAcc Accountancy with International Accounting
BAcc with Languages
BAcc Joint Honours in Accountancy and Economics
More detailed information.
For more information on the degree, work your way through the undergraduate section of Prospective Students on this web site, also check out Bachelor of Accountancy on the Glasgow University site and the downloadable booklet Accountancy.

The BAcc degree is designed to allow you to obtain a broadly based honours degree in accounting and finance, the BAcc in Accounting, or to follow one of the specialist honours degrees variants. The BAcc with Finance and the BAcc with International Accounting allow you to specialise in particular aspects of the subject area, whilst the BAcc with Languages enables you to undertake language studies, normally continuing languages learnt at school, with the option of a year studying at a University abroad in your chosen language, perhaps in preparation for an international career in accounting or finance. Additionally you may wish to broaden your studies by studying for the BAcc Joint Honours with Economics. All versions of the BAcc degree have been accredited by the UK professional accountancy bodies. This gives maximum exemption from professional examinations of the Institutes of Chartered Accountants in Scotland (ICAS) and of England and Wales (ICAEW) and of the Association of Chartered Certified Accountants (ACCA), and gives substantial exemptions from the examinations of the Chartered Institute of Management Accountants (CIMA) and of the Chartered Institute of Public Finance and Accountancy (CIPFA). No other degrees at the University of Glasgow offer full accreditation by ICAS or ICAEW and not all degrees that include the study of Accountancy will provide exemptions from the professional examinations of the major accounting professions in the UK.

Why study Accounting & Finance?

The central role of accounting and finance in today's society makes the BAcc a sound basis for many stimulating and prestigious career opportunities; within the accounting profession, in financial services or in many other related areas, particularly in management. Your path into the accounting profession will be made easier by the accredited status awarded to the BAcc by the professional accounting bodies. Accredited status means that on graduation you will be eligible for exemptions from the professional exams of the main accounting bodies in the UK. Almost all our students are successful in gaining employment on or soon after graduation. We are proud of the BAcc students' employment record, which we believe is second to none in Scotland.

TBB - Joint MBA Program at George Washington University

The School also offers three joint degrees for our full-time MBA students. Through a special credit-hour transfer arrangement, students may pursue MBA/MSF degrees in conjunction with the MSF program in two or three years or MBA/JD degrees in conjunction with the GW Law School in three to four years. The same arrangement allows students to pursue MBA/MA degrees in conjunction with GW's Elliott School of International Affairs in two to three years.

Joint MBA/MSF Degree
The joint degree MBA/MSF combines the general management focus of the MBA with the highly quantitative curricula of the MSF allowing for maximum flexibility in career focus and opportunity. The program can be completed in either two or three years.

Students will complete the MBA core curriculum during rte first year followed by MBA electives and the MSF curriculum. The MBA/MSF offers advanced education for individuals with specific career interests in the areas of financial management and applied financial research. Emphasis is placed upon the theoretical foundations of finance and quantitative methods in financial management. Students will be engaged in applied research and modeling using a variety of large professional databases and computer software packages. The international and regulatory dimensions of finance are also explored in depth. The program focuses on Risk Management, Financial Engineering, Banking, Corporate Finance, and Portfolio Analysis and Management. It has been designed to combine quantitative and computer skills with financial theory and applications.

Admission Requirements

Applicants must apply to both programs simultaneously, meet the admission standards of both programs and be admitted to both programs in order to be eligible for the dual degree. Applicants are considered for Fall entry only. Admission standards are high for both the MBA and the MSF. The joint degree program is rigorous and intensive, particularly if completed within the two-year option. Applying to the joint degree program is a three-step process:

1. Apply to the MBA program online. You must complete the online application and provide all supplemental material.

2. Complete the GW on-line application for the MSF degree. The degree code for MSF is 100 and the field code is 337.

You do NOT need to submit another application fee. Complete the application only. All of your MBA supporting documents will be forwarded to the MSF program. Upon submitting the application (without the application fee) please notify Laraine Philiotis, MBA Director, at gwmba@gwu.edu or by phone at 202-994-5536.

3. Complete the "Combined Program Application for Admission" and return it to Laraine Quinn via fax at 202-994-3571. This form along with copies of your MBA supporting documents will be forwarded to the MSF program. Please contact Ms. Valeria Bellagamba, MSF Associate Director, at bellagama@gwu.edu or by phone at 202-994-1576 with questions regarding the MSF degree. It will take approximately two weeks to process your application.

Joint MBA/JD Degree
Students must be admitted to both the Law School and the Full-Time MBA separately. Both Schools must separately approve the student's applications to pursue a joint degree program. Students are required to submit separate applications and present official copies of the LSAT and GMAT. Students can normally complete the two degrees in four years of full-time study. The joint degrees must be conferred simultaneously and only after all requirements for both degrees have been met.

Once a student has been admitted to both schools as a joint degree candidate, the first year of study must be devoted exclusively to the prescribed law curriculum. After the first year of law studies, the Law School will allow 12 credit hours of course work completed in the master's program to count toward completion of the 84 credit hours required for the law degree. The Full-Time MBA Program permits up to 14 credits of Law School course work to count toward completion of the 54 credits required for the MBA.
