Joint Degree Program - UIUC - ERC

Joint Degree Programs

Joint Degrees allow students to earn two graduate degrees simultaneously. Typically, the period of study is shorter than if each degree was pursued independently. The Illinois MBA has developed several joint degree agreements with other departments on campus.

Students need to apply to each degree program separately. All admissions decisions are made independently. It's a good idea to be familiarized with admissions policies and all application procedures for each individual college.

Students interested in a joint degree with one of the following colleges must complete the requirements outlined by both the joint college and the Illinois MBA. To obtain a list of requirements for the joint colleges below, contact the college directly.

The Boston Advantage - EMCR

Is this the world’s best college town? With 60 colleges and universities, we think so.

Boston, during the academic year, hosts more than 100,000 students and all the businesses and entertainment that cater to them.

But what else is here? Possibly more researchers and PhDs per capita than anywhere else on Earth. That means a concentration of intellectual, business, and scientific organizations that seek and reward a constant inflow of fresh young minds with new energy and new ideas.

Sure, some of the folks here talk a little funny. But we take education seriously. Not to mention our cultural assets (architecture, art, museums, libraries, symphony), historical landmarks, restaurants and clubs, shopping, and our college and pro sports teams. The School itself is just two blocks away from the Fenway Park where the Red Sox play.

Boston is a fascinating, walkable city with an excellent public transit system. Yet nearby you will find ocean and lake beaches, mountains, and wilderness. Home to major financial institutions, the world’s premier hospitals, high tech, bioscience, and more, Boston's universities and local firms enrich each other.

When you attend Boston University, you get Boston, too. Use it to your advantage.

Management education must impart the skills required to respond to technological changes, the information revolution, global competition, and constant shifts in political and social environments. Many of the management models adopted by business are outdated, and call for innovative ideas rooted in solid academic research.

Boston University’s DBA program addresses this need by training scholars to develop and sharpen management theories to enhance their contribution to management education and practice. Students acquire advanced knowledge of literature and theory in their area of specialization, the major, as well as solid grounding in a minor, for example, a social science discipline, such as sociology, economics, or political science, that provides a foundation for their area of specialization. They are given theoretical and practical knowledge of advanced research skills, which is essential for publishing in leading academic journals.

The program ensures that students develop an appreciation of the role of their research domain in managerial and organizational contexts, and can translate their learning from scholarly research into effective teaching.

Our faculty, which has earned world-wide recognition for its scholarly and applied research, is the School’s major resource for doctoral education. Their commitment to advancing management knowledge through research published in top journals, and improving the quality of teaching, enables them to effectively mentor doctoral students, who, in close collaboration with faculty, are part of the intellectual capital of the School.

The majority of doctoral students entering the DBA program receive substantial financial assistance, which covers full tuition for four years and a generous stipend. The total financial assistance for four years ranges from $135,000 for full fellowships to $119,000 for partial fellowships.

Wharton's Doctoral Program in Finance - ELB

Wharton's PhD program in Finance provides students with a solid foundation in the theoretical and empirical tools of modern finance, drawing heavily on the discipline of economics. Students build on this foundation and apply these tools to study frontier issues in asset pricing, corporate finance, financial institutions, international finance, behavioral finance, and macroeconomics.

The department is distinguished by the broad range of areas included in its curriculum and faculty research. Faculty research, both empirical and theoretical, includes such areas as: the structure of financial markets, the formation and behavior of financial asset prices, banking and monetary systems, corporate control and capital structure, saving and capital formation, international financial markets, and behavioral economics. Finance faculty are also active in the work of Wharton's Financial Institutions Center, Weiss Center for International Financial Research, and Rodney L. White Center for Financial Research.

Because financial research is analytical, candidates with undergraduate training in economics, mathematics, engineering, statistics, and other quantitative disciplines have an ideal background for doctoral studies in this field. The department prepares students for careers in research and teaching at the world's leading academic institutions, in such areas as asset pricing, corporate finance, financial institutions, international finance, behavioral finance, and macroeconomics.

Harvard DBA Program in Marketing - ELR

The DBA program in Marketing draws on a variety of underlying disciplines to research important marketing management problems centered around the immediate and future needs and wants of customers. Groups of HBS faculty pursuing research in this field, and currently welcoming collaboration with doctoral students, are studying:

  • consumer behavior
  • marketing organization and control
  • product and pricing policy
  • consumer marketing and retailing
  • multinational marketing

While the program encourages the use of field research to sense and define a problem, it does not have an ideological view on any single methodology as being superior to others in terms of the full scope of the research. Be it analytical, experimental, or qualitative, it is the appropriateness of the method in addressing the specific problem that matters. As a result, marketing faculty who work in one or more of these groups draw on a variety of underlying disciplines in research and consequently engage doctoral students in a broad spectrum of disciplinary bases.

The program draws on economic, behavioral, psychological and administrative theory to focus on marketing problems faced by the firm and its management. Through a combination of discipline- and field-based methods, the curriculum enables students to master concepts and research skills directly relevant to business problems. Candidates must come to understand the point of view of practicing managers and be able to bring theory and careful research to bear in illuminating important business problems.

Difference between DBA and PhD - ELR

What's the difference between the DBA and PhD?

The decision to pursue a particular doctoral degree at Harvard should be based on an individual's research interests and the approach one wishes to apply to that research. By reviewing each program's curriculum and faculty research interests, students can get a good sense of their potential fit.

Harvard Business School offers two types of doctoral degrees: Doctor of Business Administration (DBA) and Doctor of Philosophy (PhD). However, a student should not select a program based on the type, but rather on research focus and methods.

DBA: Power in Practice
Combining academic rigor and managerial relevance, the DBA program provides students with the flexibility to apply a broad range of disciplines and research methods to their chosen area of study. In addition, students benefit from the wide range of faculty expertise in management fields, such as accounting and marketing, and multiple opportunities to actively pursue field-based research.

PhD: Disciplinary and Management Expertise
The PhD programs are offered jointly by the Graduate School of Arts and Sciences (GSAS) and Harvard Business School. They combine the disciplinary expertise of a GSAS department (e.g. Economics, Psychology) with the management expertise of HBS. As a result, students build a strong foundation in a particular discipline and then apply those methods and approaches to their research on relevant managerial problems.

Food Management at Surrey University - EI

MSc/PGDip/PGCert
Food Management

The food industry is an exciting field in which to work. Its diverse nature presents very particular challenges to those within it. Many people reach management positions within the food sector either with relevant food-related knowledge, but no management training, or with management experience, but little food-related knowledge. This programme provides prospective managers with both types of knowledge. It is an applied programme, providing a very different perspective on food-related topics to, for instance, food science programmes. Specifically, the programme aims to develop an in-depth understanding and insight into aspects of food management. It provides a sound management education whilst developing the skills to ensure the safety, acceptability and nutritional adequacy of the food that is provided.

The programme offers a high quality vocational education, which is intellectually rigorous and up-to-date, as well as relevant to the needs of future managers, executives and professionals in the food industry. The programme has a business management orientation related to service industries and draws on a range of cognate areas of study to explain and analyse the particular sector. An integrated approach is taken so as to provide a coherent view that explores the interrelationships between the various components of the programme. The programme can be taken on a full- or part-time basis. Part-time study is based on attendance for two days per week for two years.

Curriculum Focus

THREE THEMES INHERENT IN THIS CURRICULUM ARE:
1) REPRESENTATION, 2) PROCESS, 3) SUSTAINABILITY

Representation
Students become experienced with freehand drawing, mechanical drawing, "hands-on" model building, and 3-D and 4-D computer modeling. Freehand sketching provides an efficient means of initiating schematic ideas while computer modeling and analyses allows for the rapid generation and evaluation of the impacts of design decisions. Students create compelling visual presentations utilizing the wide array of representation techniques acquired in this major.

Process
Students learn methodologies to design and construct innovative architectural forms and systems. Students gain an understanding of the entire lifecycle of the collaborative design and construction process. The focus is on thinking clearly, reasoning critically, and documenting and managing the evolution of creative ideas. The success of a design process hinges not only on bold concepts but also on a well devised means of developing and executing these ideas.

Sustainability
Students learn to develop solutions that integrate all the diverse requirements that sustainability demands. Coursework includes topics such as energy systems, ecologically friendly building materials, water conservation, and indoor air quality. The emphasis on green architecture is also manifested in the new Green Dorm, a proposed Stanford student residence that has engaged students in its design process.

Within this broad context, the Department of Civil and Environmental Engineering is especially concerned with:

  • Better understanding of natural cycles, systems, and processes relevant to human activities
  • Use of natural analogs to help design new materials, industrial processes, and infrastructure systems
  • Development of new building and transportation technologies
  • Advances in information infrastructure and logistics
  • Creation of attractive and sustainable physical environments

An education in civil and environmental engineering provides an excellent foundation for careers in fields as diverse as engineering design, education, law, medicine, and public health, as well as for graduate study in engineering and science. Our graduates teach and carry out research in universities, work for large firms, start their own businesses, and take positions in government and nonprofit organizations. As pressures on limited natural resources grow, there will be increasing demand for engineers who understand how to make best use of these resources in the products and services they design. The department's undergraduate program recognizes this need by providing background in science and engineering fundamentals while also emphasizing hands-on design projects and case studies that provide context and motivation. Students are taught how to combine theory, measurement, and modeling to develop a good understanding of the problem at hand and to point the way to desirable solutions.

The department offers two designated undergraduate degrees accredited by the Engineering Accreditation Commission of the Accreditation Board for Engineering and Technology (ABET). The Bachelor of Science in Civil Engineering provides a solid foundation for practice in both classical and newly developing areas of civil engineering, including structural analysis and design, engineering materials, geotechnical analysis and design, sustainable built environments, and transportation and logistics. The Bachelor of Science in Environmental Engineering Science emphasizes the fundamental physical, chemical, and biological processes necessary for understanding the interactions between man and the environment. Issues considered include the provision of clean and reliable water supplies, flood forecasting and protection, development of renewable and nonrenewable energy sources, causes and implications of climate change, and the impact of human activities on natural cycles. Both programs provide awareness of the sociopolitical context in which civil and environmental engineering problems are solved. Premedical students may satisfy medical school entrance requirements while earning the accredited degree in environmental engineering science with proper planning of their program. A third degree is offered for students who want more flexibility. Typical examples are students who will pursue careers in medicine, law, or scientific research.

The undergraduate programs in civil engineering and environmental engineering science share a common sophomore year that emphasizes mathematics, mechanics, ecology, and design. The ecology sequence begins by considering how natural systems work and then turns to a consideration of interactions between these systems and human activities. This sequence provides a scientific context for a consideration of sustainable design in subsequent subjects. Sophomore students from all programs work together in teams on design projects that synthesize concepts taught in the core subjects. In the junior and senior years, students from the two programs concentrate on disciplinary subjects that provide depth in each specialty. During the final term of the senior year, all students come together again in an advanced design subject that integrates lessons learned throughout the undergraduate education. There is ample room in the program for electives and minors that can be used to tailor each student's program to individual needs.

At the graduate level, the department offers two complementary but distinct types of programs. First, research-oriented doctoral and master's programs advance fundamental understanding and develop innovative approaches to engineering problems. Such programs prepare professionals for positions of leadership in research and teaching. Second, practice-oriented master's degrees introduce the political, economic, and cultural factors that influence social priorities, and prepare students to function as members of interdisciplinary teams. These programs add technical depth and professional skills beyond the four-year bachelor's degree.

Graduate programs are offered in the following areas: environmental chemistry and environmental biology; geotechnical and geo-environmental engineering; environmental fluid dynamics, coastal engineering and hydrodynamics; hydrology and water resources; materials and structures; transportation systems and engineering systems (including information technology, transportation, and infrastructure systems).

Computer Science at CalTech - EDC

Computer Science at Caltech

The computer science department at Caltech consists of a small group of students, faculty and staff. The small size and collegial atmosphere at Caltech facilitates close working relationships among faculty and students, and encourages novel interdisciplinary research. Students are encouraged to tailor their programs of courses and research to fit their specific needs. Students often collaborate on large projects, but each student is treated as an important individual, with unique goals, drives and needs.

Research emphases are in algorithms; communication protocols, concurrent computation, and networks; graphics and human-computer interaction; novel computational substrates, including quantum mechanical computers and molecular computers; VLSI, with a specific emphasis on asynchronous and analog VLSI; high-confidence systems, including fault tolerance, program verification, and security; information theory; learning theory; computer vision; and large-scale scientific computing. Projects frequently involve connections with other disciplines such as Physics, Biology, Mathematics, Mechanics, Control and Dynamical Systems, and Electrical Engineering.

Undergraduates are encouraged to do research. Many have papers in conferences or journals. The opportunity for close collaboration with faculty and graduate students on research, the flexibility of developing your own research and course structure, and outstanding facilities, makes Caltech an ideal environment for motivated undergraduates.

Graduate study in Computer Science is a full-time program. Students are admitted only with the Ph.D. as the degree objective, although an M.S. degree is a required step in the program. Students join a research group and participate in research from the very beginning, so it is important that applicants have a defined area of interest before applying. The first year emphasizes course work and master's thesis research. Students in their second year complete their master's thesis preliminary to the candidacy examination. After passing the candidacy exam, students devote their time to research on the doctoral dissertation. The program requires a minimum of three academic years of residence.

Applications are accepted once per year, no later than January 1st, and reviewed at that time for admission and financial aid for admission the following September. In order for all candidates to receive equal consideration, unofficial evaluations of likelihood admission will not be made. Applications are reviewed after all credentials, including recommendation letters and official copies of test scores, have been received. GRE scores are required, with a subject test of the student's choice strongly recommended. It is strongly recommended that applicants take the GRE in October to allow enough time for Caltech to receive the scores by January. Early submissions are encouraged as application reviews are already in progress in December.

Applications are encouraged from fields other than computer science, but applicants should be aware that the program is mathematically and scientifically oriented. Students who hold a Ph.D. degree from another institution are not normally admitted to graduate standing at Caltech to pursue a second Ph.D. degree.

Cornell Law School - EDP

History

"Lawyers in the Best Sense"
A Brief History of Cornell Law School

When Andrew Dickson White began to lay plans for a law department at Cornell University, he wrote that he wanted to educate “not swarms of hastily prepared pettifoggers, but a fair number of well-trained, large-minded, morally-based lawyers in the best sense...” He hoped graduates of the school would become “a blessing to the country, at the bar, on the bench, and in various public bodies.”

“We wish the new school success,” the Albany Law Journal noted acidly, when it learned of White’s plans, “but we do not expect it.” There were only a few law schools of any consequence in the country when Cornell’s department admitted its first students in 1887; most young men (they were almost always men) clerked in law offices, and studied on the job.

A high school diploma was not a prerequisite for entry to Cornell’s new department; tuition was $75 a year for three hours of classes a day. Students were thirsty for knowledge: “We had to drive them out of the library at night, and had a hard time answering their questions the next morning,” wrote faculty member Charles Evans Hughes. (Hughes, who later served as chief justice of the Supreme Court, then as secretary of state, said he’d “enjoyed teaching most of all.”)

The school’s growth mirrored that of legal schooling in the country; the number of law students in the U.S. tripled over the next ten years. The law department’s standards rose. By 1917, admission required at least two years of university education. World War I saw a halt in the stream of graduates, but students returned after the Armistice. Legal study was made a graduate degree in 1924, and the department of law became a professional school. In 1925, the trustees voted to give the new institution a new name: Cornell Law School.

By the end of World War II, law students who had fought overseas brought back internationally-scaled aspirations. In response, the Law School entered the arena of international legal studies in earnest.

The faculty grew in strength and numbers over the next thirty years; graduates who had prospered endowed professorships, and research flourished. Classes in legal history and philosophy found places in the catalogue of second- and third-year elective courses. So that students’ more practical legal training might not suffer, the Legal Aid Clinic was established to give students the opportunity to confront real legal problems in the real world; other clinics followed.

Today, students still come to Cornell Law School from nearby upstate New York communities; but most now come from much farther away, Florida, Tulsa, L.A., Santo Domingo, and China. When they graduate, they join major law firms, or corporate law departments; they work as public defenders, or help AIDS victims win discrimination cases; they teach law and publish books. And Andrew White’s dream has grown in a way he could hardly have anticipated, the school’s graduates serve not just this country, but several dozen others, as well. International graduates return to their own countries to posts in government and on the bench. The Albany Law Journal, thankfully, was wrong; the Law School’s success is undisputed.

Thunderbird moves further into East Asia - ECP

Thunderbird recently has taken several dramatic steps into the world’s most dynamic growth region – East Asia. The School has a new dual-degree program with a top business school in Taipei; a student exchange program with a Beijing university; a non-degree certificate program in Beijing, Shanghai and other cities; and has hired a director of Regional Initiatives based in Singapore.

“East Asia is one of the world’s most economically dynamic regions,” says Thunderbird President Ángel Cabrera. “By expanding our presence in Asia, we can strengthen the learning options for our students and further solidify our long-standing expertise and presence in this critical market.”

In Taipei, Thunderbird has partnered with Soochow University to offer a dual degree that allows students to earn an MBA from Soochow and a Master of Global Management from Thunderbird. The 2 ½-year program, which begins this fall, requires 30 credits of study the first year at Soochow, followed by 30 credits of study at Thunderbird the second year. Students then return to Soochow, a private university with approximately 13,000 students, to complete their theses in the summer and fall.

The agreement also allows undergraduates in the final semester at Soochow the opportunity to take courses in one of Thunderbird’s new master’s degree programs -- Master of Science in Global Management or Master of Arts in Global Affairs and Management – and for Soochow Executive MBA students to enroll in one of Thunderbird’s Summerim or Winterim courses. Classes for Thunderbird's MA in Global Affairs and Management and the MS in Global Management begin this fall.

During the break between the spring and fall trimesters, Thunderbird offers Summerim and Winterim courses, trip up to 20 days to spots around the world where students have in-depth cultural experiences and private meetings with corporate and political leaders. In January, more than 100 Thunderbird MBA students gathered for Winterims in places like Costa Rica, South Africa, Switzerland, Mexico, China and Jordan.

In March, Thunderbird signed an agreement with the Enterprise Research Institute of the Development Research Center of the State Council of China to offer the School’s first formal non-degree Corporate Learning certificate program in China. “Going Global Entrepreneurially” is a 12-month program for Chinese managers, who will meet several times a month in Beijing, Shanghai and other Chinese cities. The first program begins in September.

Earlier this year, Thunderbird also established an exchange program partnership with Tsinghua University in Beijing, China, one of the most prestigious and selective universities in China, often referred to as the “MIT of China.” The campus is in northwest Beijing, in the Haidian District, which is an area designed for universities, and is on the former site of Qing Dynasty Royal Gardens. The student exchange will begin with the fall trimester.

With the Tsinghua Univeristy parntership, Thunderbird has exchange agreements with more than 15 top business schools around the world. Participating in an exchange program satisfies the Thunderbird Global Experience, which requires that a student have at least one study-abroad internship outside their home country.

In an effort to further expand its Asian operations, Thunderbird named Michele von Rautenkranz ‘88 as director of Regional Initiatives, Southeast Asia. Rautenkranz has responsibility for Thunderbird activities in Thailand, Indonesia, Malaysia, the Philippines, Vietnam, Laos, Cambodia, Brunei and Singapore, where she will be based.

Marketing Ph.D. Program at Berkeley - ETC

The marketing Ph.D. program at the Haas School offers a broad range of avenues for study and exploration. In keeping with the traditional interest in operational marketing problems, students may undertake advanced studies in the mathematical modeling of buyer-seller interactions, consumer choice processes, the allocation of marketing resources into components of the marketing mix, and product development. Students may also specialize in the study of the behavioral dimensions of buyer behavior, examining attitude structures, motivations, group influences, and communication processes at the final or industrial levels.

Alternatively, the student can focus upon the development of strategic direction for the profit or nonprofit organization. Study here can include the process of market evolution, competitive behavior, and the maintenance of organizational differential advantages through product and market development, mergers, and research and development. Students may also choose to develop specialties in marketing system efficiency and fairness; the regulation of the marketing system; the evolution, growth, and modeling of distribution systems; and comparative marketing systems.

In order to cope with these expanding horizons, each marketing program is designed to provide a broad exposure to the advanced literature in each field. Students then select an area for intensive study and develop a program that trains them to comprehend and perform cutting-edge research in that field. The program includes a series of marketing Ph.D. seminars and the development of expertise in a particular social science discipline and technical skill appropriate to the analysis of the problems to be studied. The field offers four Doctoral Seminars in Marketing (BA269A-D): Consumer Behavior, Choice Models, Marketing Strategy, and Special Topics in Marketing. The objective of these courses is to familiarize the students with the existing marketing literature. In this sense, these courses are extensive in nature, covering most aspects in marketing, and presenting a framework to think about the existing literature. Classes are organized with a balance of lectures and discussion.

These tools are applied to marketing problems within the group's seminar program for Ph.D. students and in individual studies with faculty members. These activities are designed to launch students upon their own research programs and the preparation of depth prospectus. The depth prospectus serves to identify critical issues within the student's intended areas of study, provide a partial basis for field examinations, and guide the selection of dissertation advisors.

Aiding the students as they develop their research skills is a growing range of interactive and mainframe computers with specialized marketing software, a campus Survey Research Center providing aid and service to students and faculty on all aspects of the administration of questionnaires, and the maintenance of a student subject pool that permits sophisticated experimental research. Research units associated with the business school allow students to develop contacts with faculty and a means of seeking employment.

Dept. of Economics, Chicago University - E3DD

Economics at Chicago

The chief consideration in choosing a department at which to do graduate work in economics must be the quality of its faculty as economists and as teachers of economics. The Department of Economics at Chicago has always ranked among the handful of leading departments in the world. It has claimed a disproportionate share of the honors the economics profession can bestow.

Since 1969, when the Nobel Prize in economic sciences was first awarded, twenty-two recipients of that prize have been faculty, students, or researchers in the Department of Economics, Law School, or Graduate School of Business (GSB) at the University of Chicago, including Milton Friedman and George Stigler. Four Nobel laureates are currently members of the department: Gary S. Becker, Robert W. Fogel, Robert E. Lucas, Jr., and James J. Heckman. In addition, four of the six recipients of the American Economic Association’s Walker Medal were members of the faculty (J. M. Clark, F. H. Knight, Jacob Viner, and T. W. Schultz). The John Bates Clark Medal has been awarded to five Chicago economists: Milton Friedman, Gary S. Becker, James J. Heckman, Steven Levitt, and Kevin M. Murphy. Since World War II, the department has had, relative to its size, a larger number of faculty than any other serving as presidents of the American Economic Association. Former faculty members and students currently hold leading positions as economists inside and outside academic life.

These honors are only one class of testimony to an accepted fact: Chicago is an unusually innovative department of economics. The proportion of new ideas in economics over the last forty years that have emanated from or become associated with Chicago is astonishing. Any definition of the “Chicago School” would have to find room for the following ideas (in chronological order from the 1940s to the present): the economic theory of socialism, general equilibrium models of foreign trade, simultaneous equation methods in econometrics, consumption as a function of permanent income, the economics of the household, the rationality of peasants in poor countries, the economics of education and other acquired skills (human capital), applied welfare economics, monetarism, sociological economics (entrepreneurship, racial discrimination, crime), the economics of invention and innovation, quantitative economic history, the economics of information, political economy (externalities, property rights, liability, contracts), the monetary approach to international finance, and rational expectations in macroeconomics. The unifying thread in all this is not political or ideological but methodological, the methodological conviction that economics is an incomparably powerful tool for understanding society.

Chicago is known for its leadership not only in using this tool but also in teaching its students how to use it. Chicago has more than its share of gifted teachers, but the two principal reasons for its excellence in teaching are the rigorous system of examinations in the first two years of graduate study and the so-called “workshop” (that is, seminar) system for advanced students. Both are unique to Chicago. In preparing for the examinations by taking courses and working together in study groups, graduate students at Chicago acquire an unmatched mastery of economics. The workshop system then guides them through their Ph.D. dissertations. There are fourteen workshops and six working groups, in a wide variety of fields of research, meeting in small groups weekly to hear and discuss papers by students, faculty, and leading scholars from inside and outside Chicago. A vigorous placement effort, the wide contacts of a faculty central to the discipline and, above all, the high quality of the economists produced by this program assure students with degrees from Chicago the best academic or non-academic jobs that their efforts and abilities warrant. Chicago has an unexcelled Ph.D. program, with recent graduates employed at numerous top-ranked universities, private firms, and such agencies as the World Bank, the International Monetary Fund, and the Federal Reserve System.

The department has other noteworthy features. It is socially coherent and located in one place, making its twenty-nine faculty members accessible on a casual basis to the students and to each other. The economists at the Graduate School of Business (GSB), the Law School, and the Irving B. Harris Graduate School of Public Policy Studies (constituting together a first-rate economics department in their own right) have unusually close relations with the department physically and intellectually, greatly enriching the student experience. For example, Chicago’s GSB is an international center for the study of, among other things, the mathematical theory of corporate finance, as the Law School is for the study of law and economics; both fields can be offered for examinations and dissertations in the department. The Journal of Political Economy, ranking second in circulation among American journals in economics only to the American Economic Review, is published at Chicago, as are the Journal of Law and Economics, the Journal of Business, the Journal of Labor Economics, and the Journal of Legal Studies, all major journals in their fields of economics. The department is unusually cosmopolitan, with approximately 200 registered graduate students and approximately 485 undergraduate majors from all parts of the world, as well as an international faculty. It has been said that the average location of the department is 20,000 feet over the South Atlantic, for a distinguished faculty is naturally involved in the world’s thinking and the world’s work. The result back home in Chicago, reinforced by the city’s role as the air travel center of the United States, is a steady stream of return visitors from other universities, some for visits to a workshop and others for longer-term participation in the intellectual life of the department. Over the academic year more than a hundred outside speakers give papers in workshops. The Chicago student’s exposure to new ideas when they are in fact still new is unequaled.

Princeton Program in Political Economy - E50

The allocations of markets and other economic institutions are subject to the political environment in which these institutions operate. Students interested in understanding the effects and the design of economic policies should have an appreciation of the political context in which these policies are set. At the same time, students interested in political outcomes and institutions must consider the economic forces that interact with the political realm. Work in political economy aims to develop theoretical and empirical understanding of the connections between economics and politics. Methodologically, recent research in both economics and political science has drawn on a common set of tools. Both disciplines have emphasized the strategic interaction of agents in political and market environments,. Both have relied on the paradigm of the optimizing agent, with game theory and equilibrium analysis providing a common theoretical framework. Empirical work in both disciplines relies on similar statistical and econometric methods.

The Princeton Program in Political Economy is designed for students who seek to engage in scholarship at the intersection of the two disciplines. It enables students in the Department of Economics, the Department of Politics, or the Woodrow Wilson School of Public and International Affairs to supplement their disciplinary training with relevant study in the other departments and to engage in specialized work in political economy. The Program also provides for interaction among the students and faculties of the three academic units and facilitates research on topics in political economy. The Program is administered by a Program Committee drawn from faculty in the participating academic units.

Closely affiliated with the Doctoral Program is the Research Program in Political Economy (RPPE). RPPE sponsors research workshops and colloquia, conferences, short-term visits to Princeton by scholars who work in political economy, and grants to students to aid their research in political economy.

Kent State University - Financial Engineering - EB

Financial Engineering For The Future

Financial engineering is the application of mathematical methods to the solution of risk management problems in finance. Financial engineering uses tools from finance, applied mathematics, computer science, statistics and economic theory. Investment banks, hedge funds, insurance companies, corporate risk managers and regulatory agencies apply the methods of financial engineering to such problems as derivative securities valuation, risk management, strategic planning and dynamic investment strategies. As the pace of financial innovation increases, the need for highly qualified people with specific training in financial engineering intensifies.

Kent State is committed to partnering with corporations, foundations and the investment banking industry to meet the need for financial engineers. We are the only institution in Ohio to offer a Master of Science in Financial Engineering (MSFE). The program is administered by both the Finance and Mathematics departments. Our state-of-the art on-campus Olga Mural Financial Engineering Trading Floor simulates market trading conditions and provides hands-on training in financial analysis and risk management. The trading room includes 25 high-end PC stations, specialized software and on-site technical support, and is a key component of the new interdisciplinary financial engineering master's program.

Financial Engineering at Kent State University

The interdisciplinary Master of Science in Financial Engineering (MSFE) degree is designed for students with strong quantitative backgrounds who have goals of becoming risk management officers, derivatives analysts or traders. The program is a demanding one and it requires the completion of 36 credit hours of coursework, including an industry-based project. It combines strong quantitative skills from mathematics, including probability theory and numerical computing, with risk management and dynamic valuation skills from finance. In addition it draws on tools from applied mathematics, computer science, statistics, and economic theory. Investment banks, hedge funds, insurance companies, corporate treasuries, and regulatory agencies apply the methods of financial engineering to such problems as derivative securities valuation, portfolio structuring, risk management, and scenario simulation. The program emphasizes applied skills in the area of financial engineering, while still providing the necessary theoretical background. The suggested coursework fits within the guidelines established by the International Association of Financial Engineers.

The Master of Science in Financial Engineering is approved by the Ohio Board of Regents.

McDonough School of Business - EBSB

Georgetown University's Robert Emmett McDonough School of Business is a premier business school within a liberal arts-based Jesuit university. Students at the McDonough School of Business are educated in the Jesuit tradition, with an emphasis on teaching the skills necessary for distinguished professional performance with a commitment to service to others. Faculty members foster an environment for learning and select techniques that challenge students to take an active role in the education process rather than to absorb ideas passively. Committed to excellence and sensitive to the impact of managerial policies on society, the faculty integrates teaching and research.

Several academic themes distinguish the McDonough School of Business and give the school a special identity among managers and academicians, including international and intercultural dimensions of the marketplace, the importance of written and oral communication, and interpersonal effectiveness in organizations.

The McDonough School core courses in the traditional disciplines of accounting, finance, marketing, management, and the decision sciences support these themes. Additionally these themes are supported by the McDonough School's strong support of a minor concentration in one of the nearly 50 liberal arts disciplines. For example, students studying accounting and finance are particularly encouraged to consider a minor in a qualitative area that would complement their quantitative major concentration. Those studying international business are encouraged to consider a minor in a foreign language or government, and marketing students are encouraged to explore minor concentrations in psychology or sociology.

The Fast Track Learning Environment
At Babson, our world-renowned MBA curriculum teaches students to think holistically as they address the complexities and ambiguities of business.

The Fast Track curriculum incorporates case studies, in-person and Web-based discussions, and field-based projects. Its central, unifying theme is entrepreneurial leadership in a changing global environment. The program teaches the essential skills that every manager needs to know.

The technology-based distance learning components reinforce the Fast Track program's dynamic focus, extending and accelerating the learning experience. They ease communication between students and faculty members and let professors quickly disseminate course material to participants. They permit effective course discussions even when students are not gathered in the classroom. They also facilitate robust student-to-student collaboration. And they let faculty and students communicate more flexibly and immediately.

HKU MBA Program - ASI-CS

HKU MBA in partnership with London Business School and Columbia Business School

The University of Hong Kong (HKU) and its unique MBA programme is a major participant in, and contributor to, the business culture of Hong Kong and Mainland China.

MBA students today demand an approach that can set them up for success both regionally and across a wider world; a learning experience that bestows upon them a first-class education, real-world experience, and a deep understanding of international business, and cultural differences and nuances. Our MBA programme is specifically designed to produce those outcomes. The Asia-Pacific focus gives our students a unique advantage to build their career in the region and beyond.

Learn business where the business is

Mainland Chinese come to HKU to look at their country from the outside, and to learn the business methodologies of the West; while overseas students get to experience China and Asia firsthand. Both are able to relate their knowledge to a global playing field.

Diversity is key

Our location in a city with such a rich business and entrepreneurial heritage is an immense advantage for students.

Not surprisingly, Hong Kong has become a magnet for MBA students the world over. A significant percentage of our student body is from overseas and the PRC, which, combined with local students, produces an exciting and stimulating mix of backgrounds. Our professors are all distinguished in their fields and come from different countries, creating a truly international experience.

Partnerships

The unique partnerships with world-renowned business schools such as London Business School and Columbia Business School offer our students unmatched opportunities in terms of educational experience and networking. Our existing partnership with Fudan University in China further complements the overall experience.
