5 Tips on Consolidating Student Loans

By Gerri Willis, CNNMoney.com
Be Debt-Ridden

Student loans, credit card bills, home and auto financing add up to debt. How much is too much. When do you save and when do you pay it off? Get all the answers.

NEW YORK (CNNMoney.com) - After July 1, rates on student loans are set to be their highest in six years. But there are steps you can take to limit the damage.

1: Don't wait
If you've been thinking about consolidating your student loans, don't wait. After July 1, interest rates on existing loans are expected to rise 2 percentage points and new loans will have a 6.8 percent interest rate. That's the highest in six years.Students in school or in the grace period can lock in a rate of 4.75 percent. Borrowers who are repaying their loans and have not consolidated before can lock in a rate of 5.38 percent. And parents, you too should consolidate if you have PLUS loans. That interest rate will rise to a fixed 7.94% from 6.1%. According to Sallie Mae, a recent graduate consolidating $20,000 in loans during his or her grace period could save over $5,000 by doing so before July 1. If you don't think you'll be able to get your paperwork in, go online and send in your application electronically. Most lenders have an online presence.2: Do your researchIf you only have one lender, by law you must consolidate with that lender. But if your loans come from multiple sources you can use your leverage to get the best deal.

Debt Management Tools

Sometimes, the first step to solid debt management is a plan. Get organized with these debt management calculators and tools.

Make sure lenders know you're comparing. You can check different consolidation options at finaid.com.While all lenders must charge the same rate, many lenders offer special deals or have special programs. Check out consolidationoptions.com or estudentloan.com to get a sampling of what's out there.Keep in mind the lenders on these sites pay to be there. You may want to consider consolidating with the Federal Direct Student Loan Program because you have the option of an income-contingent payment. If you're not sure who has your loans, go to the national student loan data system at www.nslds.ed.gov

3: Watch the fine print on discounts
Some lenders knock off a quarter of a percentage point off your loans if payments are automatically debited from your account. But some lenders require at least $7,500 in your account before giving you this discount.

You may be able to reduce your interest rate another percentage point or so by making payments on time for a year or more. Some lenders require you have at least $10,000 in student loan debt to qualify for this discount. Robert Shireman of the Project on Student Debt says keeping up with payments may not sound hard, but very few people actually reap the benefits of this discount.

4: Increase your payment amounts
While you may be lowering your monthly payments by almost 50%, you'll be increasing the amount of money you pay long-term. When you consolidate, your repayment period can be stretched to a 30-year term depending on how much debt you have. As a result, you're paying a lot more interest. The solution: make higher payments. There are no prepayment penalties. The savings can be dramatic. A student with a $20,000 worth of debt would pay $5,809 in interest over a decade. With a 20 year consolidated loan, the interest payment of that same loan would more than double to $12,681.

Type Current APR
30 Yr Fixed Mtg 5.69% 5.88%
5/1 ARM 5.54% 6.88%
$30K HELOC 6.23% 0.00%
36 Month New Car Loan 6.88% 0.00%
1 Yr CD 4.79% 4.91%

5: Consolidate while you're still in school
If you're still in school, you can take advantage of a loophole to consolidate now. If you're a freshman or a sophomore with more than $5,000 in debt, you'll be able to consolidate.First, call the lender who holds your loans and ask for an early repayment status. Then you'll need to get an in-school deferment so you don't have to start paying back your bills right away. Now you're eligible to consolidate. Once you graduate you'll have to start paying back your loans immediately, but you can always claim an economic hardship or an unemployment deferment according to Mark Kantrowitz of finaid.com.This loophole will close on July 1st.

MBA in Entrepreneurship

MBA in Entrepreneurship could be on of the most popular MBA program in near future as one is likely to do his/her own business and this is coupled with that the internet has paved the way to access people all around the world meaning a start-up business is able to fight against big name companies. MBA in Entrepreneurship and Business Venturing is a program provided by the university of Stirling, Scotland, UK from which I graduated years ago. This program sounds very interesting and I might have taken this program if the program was provided at the time.

Top Asian MBAs

The information is not up-to-date. It is 5 years old but it is the latest rankings I could find on the net.

In countries in Asia MBAs are winning increasing currency. Often candidates from Asia attend schools in the US or Europe, but many Asian schools offer an excellent and very good value business education. The term Asia is rather imprecise and includes a vast area and we use it here as a convenient term, and not because we believe it be a homogeneous area.A number of rankings exist for the area.
The FT 2001 survey included a number of business schools in the area but the main rankings for Asia are probably those of Asia Week. The following schools in "Asia" appear in the FT 2001 rankings. Autralian Graduate School of Management (42) Hong Kong University of Science and Technology (48) Melbourne Business School (58) National University of Singapore (89) University of Otago (92) The ratings in brackets refer to the FT 2001 rankings for that school (these rankings cover the top 100 schools worldwide). Korean Songs, MIT Sloan MBA Program in Korea & Student Loan Tips

Sungyunkwan University Graduate School of Business students spend their final semester at MIT Sloan

In 2003, MIT Sloan and Sungyunkwan University Graduate School of Business (SKK GSB) in Seoul signed a Memorandum of Understanding to work together for eight years to develop a new world-class, English-language MBA program at SKK GSB. The goal of the program is to develop leaders of Asia-based global companies. SKK GSB admitted its first class of 34 in the fall of 2004. One-third are international.

This spring, 12 of those 34 students are spending their final semester here at MIT Sloan. The rest are participating in other U.S. MBA programs.

For the six SKK GSBs at MIT Sloan who are not native Koreans, the opportunity to spend time in Cambridge is yet another entry on resumes already studded with international experiences. For the six Koreans, these months at MIT are an essential first step toward international careers that will lead them to tours of duty and increasing responsibility through Asia and Eastern Europe and possibly Europe and the Western hemisphere.

When they graduate from SKK GSB this summer, six will go to work for Samsung Group, Korea’s biggest conglomerate, which selected them through a competition held in countries throughout Asia and Eastern Europe, is paying for their education, and has assured them of employment for the next several years. Most of the others are sponsored by other leading Korean corporations, including Samsung, under similar arrangements.

‘A rich environment’
The students say they are having an amazing time at MIT Sloan — and across MIT. At MIT Sloan, they are carrying full course loads across a wide range of topics, including leadership, international management, marketing, information technology, managerial communication, system dynamics, disruptive technologies, entrepreneurship, negotiation, corporate finance, and mergers & acquisitions. Four are fitting in classes at Harvard (three at the business school, one at the Kennedy School) as well.

Many are also participating in club activities and going to C-functions (“a great experience to feel a totally different culture”). During lunch hours and into the evenings, they attend CEO lectures at MIT Sloan and all over MIT.

“Meeting so many people, hearing their opinions and experience, is major,” says one student. “SKK GSB is so small. This is enormous. Sloan has resources that aren’t available in Korea — professors with different styles, different kinds of classes. It is a rich environment.”
Some are also making time for sports, from volleyball pickups and tournaments to daily tennis games. And they have learned their way to favorite restaurants and neighborhoods in Boston, a city that reminds the ones who have been to Europe (or come from there) a lot of European cities.

During Spring Break and on weekends, some of them have traveled and will travel more — to Los Angeles, San Diego, Las Vegas, New York, Washington, and the New England ski slopes. When school lets out, two are planning a six-week fly/drive blitz from Mexico City and Acapulco to Alaska.

New perspectives
Certainly one important reason that eleven of the twelve SKK GSB students can take such full advantage of opportunities here is that they have already been hired by their sponsors. (The twelfth, who is self-sponsored, is looking for a job.)

They don’t have to do much housekeeping either, because there’s always something to eat in the Hospitality Room at the Marriott Residence Inn in Kendall Square, where most are staying. The location, just a few minutes’ walk from MIT and the T, is ideal. They can get to where they are going fast — and they do.

Like second-year MBAs everywhere, the SKK GSBs have found the schoolwork this final term less onerous: “There was more pressure at SKK; we spent more time studying for final exams. Here, we write more papers, we have more time.”

For the native Koreans in the group, who have had little experience speaking English outside of school, finding their way around MIT the first week was “confusing.” For the non-Koreans, who take classes in Korean when they are in Seoul but whose common language is English, coming to Cambridge has been a comfortable move. Says one student: “Here we understand everything because it is in English.”

At first, the diversity of MIT Sloan students and faculty came as a shock. Now it is giving them new perspectives.

“We thought we were fully diversified, ” says one student. “But here, because MIT Sloan is so large, there’s more diversification. The professors and students from other countries give us unique points of view.”

Despite its small size, SKK GSB, which will soon enroll its third MBA class, draws students from many Asian and Eastern European countries, including China, Vietnam, Thailand, Singapore, Russia, Malaysia, Indonesia, Poland, Hungary, Slovakia, India, Ukraine, and Romania.

‘Difficult to leave’
As much as the SKK GSB students appreciate the opportunities that MIT Sloan is giving them, they are also sensitive to differences that do not translate so directly into benefits. These differences are most apparent during case discussions in class.

Says one student: “We’re all accustomed to HBS cases. But over 90 percent of them deal with American companies, and Western approaches are not always applicable to Asian cases.

Corporate governance issues are very Western. Maybe 30 percent of the ethics cases aren’t applicable. Asian culture and management are different. Some things would work in Asia. Others would face some resistance.”

The flip side of this experience is that the SKK GSB students have found MIT Sloan students genuinely interested in what’s going on in Asia, indeed anywhere else in the world. “In our Cross-Cultural Leadership course, a lot of countries were represented and everyone spoke out about their nation.”

One SKK GSB student who actually arrived at MIT Sloan ahead of the spring semester so that she could take part in IAP probably speaks for all of her classmates when she says, “I made friends in the first day. Students here are incredibly free. It’s going to be very difficult to leave in May.”

Tips on Getting A Scholarship

These are tips on how to win a scholarship I got from a website as stated at the end of the post.

Letters of Recommendation
Beside the basic application form and essay(s), most, if not all, institutions and scholarship committees will require you to submit some sort of letter of recommendation. Letters of recommendation (endorsement or reference) may be from a teacher, an alumni, an employer, a leader in your church, or a prominent member or your community. Colleges and committees request these letters so that they will have a point-of-view other than your own as to your greatest strengths and attributes.

In selecting individuals whom you would like to write a letter of recommendation, it is wise to ask someone who knows you well and admires your accomplishments. It would not be logical to ask your ninth grade teacher (the one you surprised by putting a bat in his cabinet) who does not like you very much, or the city council-woman whom you helped with her campaign (but who does not remember you at all), who will probably just write, "He comes from a good family." Schools and scholarship committees aren't interested in your family, nor will the teacher you pulled the prank on be very likely to give that scholarship committee a favorable impression of you. Select persons with whom you have a long-standing acquaintance and who will compose a letter of recommendation giving specifics: non-academic interests, personal strengths, unusual qualities, work experience, and anecdotal examples of your integrity, humor, ability to adapt, interpersonal skills, interest in others, and openness to new experiences.

When asking someone to write a recommendation on your behalf, it is helpful to give them a written description of the scholarship (you can just copy the information that the awards committee sends applicants). Be sure to mark the deadline clearly for endorsers, so they will know when to complete your letter. It is polite to ask for the reference between two and three weeks in advance. (You do not want them to be rushed in writing your letter -- and if the first person you ask declines, you still have time to choose someone appropriate to write for you.) With all this time and information, they will be able to convey to the committee why you as an individual are best suited to receive the scholarship.

Personal Statement

The Essay
Scholarship donors and admissions officers want to know more about their applicants than just statistics and dry facts. Essays are an extremely important part of the admissions and scholarship selection process. The essays define who the applicant is, and highlight their accomplishments and education/career goals.

To begin, you are writing for a purpose; you are trying to convince either an admission officer or a committee, that by virtue of your merit (academic achievement, athletic prowess, leadership interests, etc.) they should either admit you into their school or award you money to be used towards furthering your education. In order to accomplish this, present yourself as clearly and completely as possible. Your personal essay should be dedicated to expounding your good qualities and achievements.

Committees and admissions officers are impressed with personal growth and individuality. If you think that cannot possibly mean you, think again -- it does. As a senior, you are not the same person you were as a freshman. You have matured socially, you probably have more family and/or work responsibilities, and you probably have become more involved in your academics and outside interests since your freshman year. If all of this weren't true, you wouldn't be thinking about attending college, and you wouldn't be reading this now. So think positively and brainstorm! Don't worry whether or not what you have to say is important enough or particular enough to catch someone's attention. If you are writing about something that you truly care about, it will be interesting and worthwhile.

Determine what kind of essay are you writing. If you are applying for admission to college, you may be asked to write on one or more of the following general topics: • Evaluate a significant experience or achievement that has special meaning to you. • Discuss some issue of personal, local or national concern and its importance to you. • If you could travel through time and interview a prominent figure in the arts, politics, religion or science (for example), whom would you choose and why? • Please discuss your reasons for pursuing a university education and explain why you want to attend (Name of College) to attain your educational goals. (Often this may be more particular, why do you want to enter the engineering school, how is the study of history related to your goals?)

You will want to tie together your desire to further your education and why that particular university is the best place for you to do so (even though you are applying to other colleges and universities). For example, you may want to write on a recent summit between our President and the President of the Soviet Union. You would first briefly discuss the importance of that encounter in world politics. Then secondly, you would state how this event relates to your interest in diplomacy (if that is true), and how, since their school has a particularly strong foreign relations program (if that is true), their school is particularly suited to filling your interests and career goals.

If you are applying for a scholarship offered by a private foundation, consider the source. For example, if the Daughters of the American Revolution offers scholarships, what do you think they might ask you to write on? They are undoubtedly a patriotic organization, perhaps you should brush up on your U.S. history and government. If you are writing on a specified topic (e.g., "The Importance of Education to Minorities in the 21st Century"), realize that you will need to do some research and reading. Whether or not you are answering a specific question, being aware of and tying pertinent news and events into your essay will be helpful to you.
Most scholarship committees want a personal statement highlighting your goals and why you are the best applicant for their scholarship(s). Do not begin your essay with, "I want this scholarship..." Most scholarships are at least partially awarded on the basis of need, and the fact of your application tells them that you want the award. Show them how the donor's scholarship is needed to bring you closer to your goals.

Hints for writing your essay
Start in the middle and work your way out. Unless you know exactly what you want to say (which is unlikely for most writers), you will need to do some thinking, organizing, and reviewing for clarity and content.

Thinking:
List any and all positive and creative things about yourself and your high school career. Here again, focus on why and how you achieved your goals and interests, instead of just listing them. The essay is a chance to show them who you are as a person, not just what you have done.
What type of essay are you writing? Are you answering a specific question? Are you trying to describe your goals and interests? Who is your audience?
Prioritize: What are the most important facts about you that they need to know? Choose things that aren't reflected in other parts of the application.

Organizing:
Theme: begin to develop your ideas into paragraphs.
Continuity: use the same voice throughout the paper (be consistent with personal pronouns and verb tense) and make sure the end of one paragraph blends with the beginning of the next.
Clarity: use concrete language and examples, get down all the information you want to express, but don't get lost on tangents.

Checklist:
Does your introduction capture the reader's attention?
Are you consistent in your verb tense?
Are you clear and coherent?
Are you concise enough to adhere to limits of length?
Have you checked for grammatical and spelling errors?
Does the essay present you as you wish to be seen?
Did another person check your essay for grammatical errors?
Would you remember your essay if you read 200 others?
Does your closing paragraph present you as you wish to be remembered?

Activity Sheet
The activity sheet should be a simple and clear list of the clubs, sports, hobbies, awards, volunteer or paid jobs which you have pursued throughout your high school years. Some schools will ask that you list the activities chronologically, others will ask that you list them in order of importance to you. What the scholarship or admission committees seek to learn from this listing is how you have spent your time outside of class and the extent to which you have committed yourself to those interests. Do not forget to list things that are important to you, even if they are not organized into clubs or lessons. You may like to paint each weekend or you help teach Sunday school classes at your church. If it is important to you, and reflects part of yourself that the selection committees should know about, write it down. They won't know until you tell them.
Interview
Interviews are required by some scholarship committees, usually as one of the final stages of the selection process. An interview is more likely to be required if the scholarship is awarded for personal characteristics, like leadership or motivation, as well as strict achievement. The scholarship committee may want to meet you in order to give a personal impression to all the forms they receive. The interview can be an opportunity to emphasize for them your interests and hopes for your college education. Being neatly dressed and prompt helps; it tells the interviewer that you care about receiving the scholarship. Beforehand, it might reassure you to look over the copies you made of your application. This will refresh your mind and help you focus on what you and your interviewer will most likely discuss. Even though the setting of an interview may make you nervous, remember that they are just trying to get to know their potential recipient better.

After a while, all the clich?s about MBA programs in Asia begin to blend together. At Sasin, in the heart of Bangkok, Thailand, they happen to be TRUE! But what really sets Sasin's MBA program apart from the others is that students genuinely love THE SASIN MBA THAILAND EXPERIENCE.
